I never gave this shape much thought but I'm starting to like it. I don't care for the "ornament" version though.
I'm not sure I'll ever end up with one, but if you have pics of yours, please post them.

condorlover1, speaking for myself, and probably others here, this is how we grow as pipers, so yes, show them! Regards.

Cool, thanks for all the pics.
Nice Rattray set! Did you ever smoke them?
The cutty I'm interested in is a Rattray. Looks like I'll have to make due with the "ornament" since most cutty's seem to have them. I was looking at the history and it seems like all the 18th century clay pipes have them as well, so I guess it's more true to the original design.

Very nice pipes everyone. I do really like the cutty shape but don't own one yet. I fell in love with one recently at my local B&M and if it's still there the next time I go it will be coming home with me. :D

Yeah, that. I saw it called an "ornament" somewhere. I'm still not sure what the point is, other than to be true to the original clay pipe designs.
Which still begs the question - What was the purpose of the "foot" on clay pipes? Most of them with a "foot" don't look like they could be sitters (although some obviously are).

Good question -- I'm not sure anyone knows, really. Happy to be corrected on this, though.

Some slick pipes in this thread !

I've heard a few theories on the "foot". One is that originally it was a "squeeze-out" for excess clay in the mold when the tobacco chamber was hollowed out.

Also hear that it is a little nub to hold when the bowl gets too hot.

If you look at the earliest pipes though, from the 1500-1600's, it was not a "nub" as much as it was just a wide, thick flat spot beneath the bowl. Most likely, it was just to add strength and heat resistance to a spot that was structurally weak and prone to the highest temperature buildup.

Here's a neat article I found on early clay pipes. It mentions the transition from a "heel" to a "spur" but doesn't explain what it was for. Also, check out the skull, interesting!
The bowl's become very hot when smoked and the stems were designed to break off making these pipes inconvenient to hold. The foot is the "handle" on a clay pipe.
I love the shape. My eye is naturally drawn to cutty's but I have a hard time identifying why! I have an old Comoy's cutty that I absolutely adore despite being a simple number. I can't help but wonder how well the deeply canted cutty's smoke. They seem a pain to light.

I have one clay cutty. It's a shape I like but don't particularly desire to own. This post is cutty heaven. Beautiful pipes. Fishn', those are some gorgeous ones. And the meerschaum, wow. If I collected everything I fancy, I'd have to rent storage. As I joke at my local B&M when the owner asks me if I see any pipes I like, I say, I'm looking for something I don't like.
