Bob was kind enough to send me a beautiful pipe he didn't use. It arrived today and I love it! It smokes so much better than my other pipe and the stem is longer so my tongue didn't tingle at all. It's a GBD straight apple new era. Still figuring out what that means, but what I do know is that it doesn't whistle or gurgle, its small size fits in my little hands, and it feels good too.
Thank you Bob! It's great!!!!
A smile will always keep them guessing.

My pleasure, Betty!
GBD is one of my favorite English brands of the past. As for the description: "straight" (well, um, not bent), "apple" is the shape of the bowl, and "New Era" is GBD's name for that particular model, referring most likely to the finish. (So, it's likely that other "New Era" pipes would also be smooth and feature that reddish tint.)
Glad to hear you like it and that it'll get used. Just turned out to be a tiny bit too small for me.

Thanks for the info too! I've got to research different shapes and things so I can sound like I know what I'm talking about. I'm sorry yet glad it didn't fit you as it's perfect for me.
Thanks!

Very nice of you Bob - congrats to you too eibhir. GBDs are well respected in the pipe world.

I've had a few GBD's, only had one that was a stinker, that monster system pipe they made many years ago (had the taste of mildew no matter how many cleanings, eventually burned it in the fireplace....at least got some use out of it), the others were fine pipes. One of the best values around, in my opinion.
Why didn't you post a photo of it?

That's priceless.

Yeah, I know, it's kind of funny, but if you think about it...what else can you do with a pipe that isn't broken, but can't be smoked without gagging? You can't give it away to another pipe smoker, you could start a war that way...too ugly to put on display, and if you just stick it in a drawer, you might someday be tempted to try it again...burning it was my only option.

You know, I could absolutely picture J.M. Barrie including this as the basis for a chapter in My Lady Nicotine. I think he could have worked wonders with it.

Can't go wrong with a GBD
I know what I need, smoke, I can't recall the last time I tasted it....Gandalf in the mines of Moria.
"we shall have to share pipes, as good friends must at a pinch'....'I keep a treasure or two near my skin, as precious as rings to me. Here's one: my old wooden pipe. And here's another an unused one...He held up a small pipe with a wide flattened bowl, and handed it to Gimli. 'Does that settle the score between us', said Merry. 'Most noble hobbit, it leaves me deep in your debt."

In case you all are curious, here's the photo I sent, just to make sure eibhir would like it:

Thank you for even more great info. I'm still going to take it out and about though! It's wonderful.

That's a handsome pipe, in my opinion, I love an apple, they're a very clean and cheerful design (yep, sounds silly, but that's what it makes me think). I'd have been happy to own it myself, generous gesture.
Now we need a photo of it being smoked.
