I hope you only keep the military mounts separated for long periods of time, or the shank could crack on reassambly. See a recent post of someone breaking his favorite pipe by doing this.

I keep my military mounts separate when traveling as they fit the shirt pocket better. I always believed that they were made to be transported in two pieces for the safety of the pipe. Never had a shank crack when re-assembling, the collar should prevent that unless you really torque the union by over inserting the bit or not inserting the bit straight into the stem.
