Ok.... this is sort of specific. I am new enough to pipe tobacco not to have smoked a lot of dark Virginias. Most specifically I first tried Benjamin Heartwell's Signature Blend which I like, and then Dark Star which I liked even better. I really like Dark Star. I am looking for others that might fit into this category. Both of these tobaccos have a really strong vinegar/ bbq type smell. I would like to try more in this genre. Thanks for the help!

Never had either of those blends, but i would recommend, based on my own experience with starting, maybe Orlik golden sliced, its a very good straight VA. Its also very accessible, and then, easy to judge where to go from there. Thats how i was taught i guess

Some say McClelland's bulk 2015 Va. flake has that tangy BBQ and pungent taste.

You should email Russ Ouellette at PipesAndCigars.com and ask him. I don't profess any expertise in this area,
but I'm pretty sure the tastes you are looking for come from stoved Virginias.

If we are talking Vs, MC is where it is @ I just went through their Honeydew blend in record speed, any of their blends like Blackwoods flake (another blend I can't seem to keep in-stock here), St. James Woods (for a lil VaPer mix'in) you would really like and if you really want to stir up the taste-buds, hit up some of their Tudor Castle

If you like Hartwell Signature (and I do too!), may I recommend McCranie's Red Ribbon, or Red Flake, since you seem to be fond of flakes. You might also want to try McClelland's Brindle Flake, which,IIRC,is similar to Signature.

McClelland's Blackwoods Flake is another blend similar to Darkstar.

Of course you will get as many recommendations from as many members there are but, I would try McClelland's Black Shag.
