I just ordered these:
1. G. L. Pease: Maltese Falcon 2oz - had some at the Chicago show and damn was it good!
2. McClelland: Frog Morton 50g - same as above - sampled in Chicago and damn good. Python's recent review reminded me to get some.
3. McClelland: Bombay Extra 50g - ordered on Mate's recommendation.
4. McClelland: Blakeney's Best Acadian Ribbon 50g - almost done with my first tin and love the taste.
5. McClelland: Blakeney's Best Latakia Flake 50g - it says Latakia, what more do I need to know?
6. Samuel Gawith: Commonwealth 50g - ordered on Mate's recommendation.
7. Samuel Gawith: Bracken Flake 50g - ordered on Python's recommendation after reading his review.
I also wanted to get Samuel Gawith Fire Dance from Python's recommendation and SG Skiff from Mate's recommendation, but they were sold out.
That is a good order Kevin!
Hopefully you will enjoy them all.
I will be placing a TAD order of my own soon. I am going to get an 8 pack sampler of some GLPease blends. I just have to figure out which blends to get, there are so many I want to try, lol.
Just opened a Tin of the Maltese Falcon on Friday Night
Some people don't like the big chunks. Personally I like them. I think this will be in my top 5.
It is a dry tin. I just tried humidifying this morning, to see results. Not that I have any complaints about it.

Re Commonwealth Mixture, I just has some at 4:30am with my double cup of wake up coffee. Listening to the end of my last Audio Book #17 in The Sackett Series (For Western / Louis Lamour Fans)
I find I like this 1st thing in the day. This stuff is so gooddddddd. Like Tanya Full Bodied, Dark and Sweet.
Wouldn't mind opening my eyes to Tanya bring my coffee and a mid size to large bowl of Commonwealth Mixture.
Oh well fantasies, fantasies, fantasies, at this age I need something to dream about
Kevin,
I would like your impressions of Commonwealth Mixture
If you cant get Skiff or Squadron Leader, I think its because of me

I just got notice that mine shipped. Now when I hear a knock on the door I go running like a kid at Christmas. (Are we still allowed to say "Christmas" these days?)

Mate Said: You just bought braces for some Tobacconist Child
Actually the cost isn't that bad. They are all just 1oz samples of the blends.
I wish that I was able to buy the tins of all those blends though, lol.
Someone must have gone crazy over at SmokingPipes.com. Look how my SG Bracken arrived.

Oddly, the box seems fine except for a very slight dent in the corner.

They apologized, said they would show these pictures to the shipping dept., since these obviously left there like that as the shipping box is in good condition, and most importantly, they are shipping me free replacements for the 3 dented tins - actually the SG Bracken looks like someone took a hammer to it.
Maybe it was a smoke nazi?
Cooking up some Cuban food for dinner - Picadillo, Platanos, Rice & Beans - and then I will try the SG Commonwealth and give Mate the feedback he has been waiting all week for.
Re SG Tins
I get mine mostly from PaylessPipes.com
Many of the tins are also dented, I put those to use first.
Personal question, are u sure an EX is not friendly with the PostMan, Fedex Delivery guy??????
I guess a slight dent once in a while is no biggie, but that one tin sure didn't look like an accident.
mate said: Personal question, are u sure an EX is not friendly with the PostMan, Fedex Delivery guy??????
LMAO. You could be on to something there.
Kevin Thats Cruel
I Loveeeeeeeeee Cuban Food, got hooked on it in Miami 2 yrs ago. Funny I don't care much for Mexican
I think the Cuban is closer to Venezuelan Food
My mother was Venezuelan and my father was ½ Venezuelan, so that probally explains why I like the food and I cant get it. Venezuela is only 7 miles away from Trinidad
Wow Kevin, it looks like someone was having a bad day and took out their anger on those tins. They must hate Bracken Flake or else they were planning on buying it and you got the last tins so they gave them some extra care while packing, lol.
When Laura looked at it she said it looked like it was run over by something, that the dent looked like a wheel mark. I have my feedback on SG Commonwealth and I will post it in a new thread.
You going to smoke those?
Look out for any foreign substance
The Anti Smoking Nazis may have teemed up with Al Quida (To me its hard to tell the difference between them anyway) , and might be messing with US Postal Service again.
Just do the normal thing and dump defective products on 3rd world countries
You have my address

Got some new stock in...

Nice pick ups Phil.
I'll see if the wife appoves when she gets home...
OK, my stash... Yes there are alot of samles, that's whats in the baggies... 33 to be exact...

Nice stash Phil. I had the little tobacco devil on my shoulder earlier today. He was saying "go to the tobacco store, buy yourself some more tobacco." I said "but shouldn't I smoke up some of the tobacco I already have?" "NO, NO, NO, he said." Long story short I bought 2 pouches of sir walter raleigh, never had it before. I will review it when I get at least through one pouch.
Aromatic or Straight?
The Aromatic, thought maybe it would be a good change from the usual.
I bought a pouch of that the other day... not sure what it smells like...
I yet to open mine to smell it. Probally open it tommarrow. I threw it on the shelf right beside two pouches of borkum riff someone sent me. I give you my opinion when I do.
Phil, nice assortment. How do you like the seals on those glass jars?
Seals are good... they have a nice "POP" when you open them... some of the best counter jars I've come across...
Here a picture of some new tobacco I got from pipesandcigars.com.
The bag on the left is PS bullseye flake 4oz and the bag on the right in H&H ANi kake 4oz
Man...I really wish P&C would have been able to ship my 'baccy choices. I was wanting to try their Butternut Burley.
Sapo:
Just got some Bayou Flake myself. Haven't got into it yet. Have you?
Got Golden Sliced, Erinmore Flake, Pease Union Station, Irish Flake, and Blackwoods Flake in the same order. So the competition is stiff for "Who's next?"
Tried the Anny Cake yet?
Sapo, Nice additions, you'll have to let me know on your choices, I'm still looking for the "natural".
Jonesing, I've only tried the PS bullseye flake so far. The anni kake smells great, I can't wait to try some. I'll keep everyone updated on how things go.
Nice pick ups Sapo!
You sound like a kid in a candy shop. LOL
Looks like the European blends we have been waiting for are finally being shipped!
Yeah I'm not sure if that's it or if smokingpipes had more to start with or what. I've never bought from them before, but either P&C is running low or they don't' update their website. It says to call....but I shop online so I don't have to call.
Nice sampler Jonesing!
I just placed an order for some baccy myself. Here is what I ordered:
Peter Stokkebye Proper English
Peter Stokkebye B&B
Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake
Paladin Black Cherry (Because Pstlpkr kept posting it in the 'What are you smoking' Thread)
Cornell & Diehl Bayou Morning
Cornell & Diehl Night Train
McClelland Grand Orientals - Drama Reserve
McClelland 221b Series
Black Shag
Arcadia
Honeydew
And some Nasal Snuff
I was really surprised at how reasonable the cost was on Peter Stokkebye bulk tobacco. 8 oz of their Proper English blend is only $11.10 at Pipesandcigars.com!
Nice selection Bob. Have you tried the Black Shag yet , or is this a first order?
Nice list Bob.
Love the Paladin choice.
In another small order from 4Noggins (I needed Falcon extra thin pipe cleaners and since I was already ordering and all...)I ordered a drug store sampler trio.
PA
Walnut
Carter Hall
I also ordered 8 ozs of their pure Vermont Maple syrup!
I like your choices Bob . Iam going to have to get some Night Train have not had the pleasure of that blend yet .
Art, I have not tried Black Shag before. This is the first time that I have bought it.
Jonesing, I have been wanting to order some of their maple syrup. Let us know how it is.
Igloo, I have only smoked two bowls of Night Train and I like it so far. It has some strength to it, but I don't find it to be super strong like a lot of people say it is. But I do have a high tolerance to nicotine.
Looks like I am going to have to breakdown and order a tin of Black Shag . Lookedawfully interesting to me.
Art, I want to open my tin soon to try it, but I have so many other blends that are open or in ziplocks that I need to work on them before I open any new tins.
I known the feeling Bob!
I have some Night Train and have smoked only a couple bowls. So far, pretty much like Bob said, pretty good stuff, not as over the top strong as some have found it.
Overall good solid stuff but hasn't yet distinguished itself as a "wow". Hasn't convinced me yet that it's something I couldn't live without.
For a BurVaPer I like Frenchy's Sunzabitches better so far.
Whew! Just finished jarring some bulks I acquired today:
C&D's Night Train
C&D's #526 Pa. Maduro Leaf
G&H's Dark Birdseye
Gawith's Bracken Flake
Stokkebbye's Lux. Bullseye

And some tins for the shelf:
GLP's Chelsea Morning
GLP's Laurel Heights
Escudo
Cortez how do you sterlize the jars and do you lid them while warm?
I've heard people say to do do it hot but Greg Pease says that's a waste of time and to just screw the lids on no need for the little "ping" when the vacuum seals the lid.
Jonesing, I'd just wash the jars in the dishwasher without soap... Maybe put the tobacco in them while they are still warm and screw the lids on...
Kinda how I'm leanin' Phil. Really my only concern is that our water is harrrrrdddd. The stuff leaves a film on your windshield when the irrigation system runs. I wonder about those minerals in the jars.
But I'm probably over thinking.
Just pull them out before the dry cycle and hand dry them...
TO: jonesing
RE: Kinda how I'm leanin' Phil. Really my only concern is that our water is harrrrrdddd.
1) I call this a good problem, all you have to do is drink 8 glasses of water a day, and you will never have to buy Viagra or Cialis
2) Your pipe stems will not get soft with age
TO: jonesing
RE: Kinda how I'm leanin' Phil. Really my only concern is that our water is harrrrrdddd.
Usually hard water has lots of calcium, so you can tell the wife your tobacco is preventative medicine for osteoporosis.
Maybe she will take up pipe smoking too.
Jonesing,
I think Phil's advice with the dishwasher is good. I don't have a dishwasher so I boil the jars for ~10 minutes. They air dry super fast, and they're still pretty hot when I fill them; but like Pease says, I don't worry about whether a slight cooling vacuum forms.
Lately I've become more interested in jarring to retain the original condition of the tobacco than in aging it. As I noted elsewhere, after two years of aging, only McClelland's 5100 improved remarkably well. Va flake, Vaper, and Navy flake didn't show much improvement.
Sometimes I run the jars through the dishwasher and other times I just was them with hot, soapy water. IMO, there is no need to sterilize the jars. You just want them nice and clean. Do not put the lids in the dishwasher. Just the jars and the rings. I have been doing it this way ever since I started building up my stash and I've never had a problem.
I don't heat the jars up after filling either. I just load them with tobacco and screw the lids on.
Jonesing, if your dishwasher has a spot for a drying agent (JetDry) add some to it. It makes it so that the hard water film doesn't stick to the dishes. I have semi-hard water.
Just ordered from smokingpipe.com two ounces of the Stokkebye Black Cavendish and Navy Flake. I watched Bob's video on how to smoke flake tobacco and was inspired to try it.
I like the Navy flake and smoke it alot . It ages very well I tossed some two year old in the box pass .
bought a 50g tin of University flake. I like the smoke, but for a never-before-smoker, the nicotine is pretty high. will put some in the box-pass.
Agree with Igloo. Luxury Navy Flake is one of my faves when in the mood for some manner of a fairly straight VA. Smoked a bowl yesterday and it was outstanding.
All fo the Stokkebye stuff and the entire Luxury line stands up with the ultra premium blends I've smoked and the price is amazingly reasonable.
2 Tin's of Bell's Three Nuns Tobacco 50g from 1999.
I think Im gonna save up some funds for the Columbus show. It'll be my first opportunity to really see tobaccos and smell them before buying. Is it fairly priced at those kinds of gatherings?
