Viola.

Tried the Mississippi River right away. Seeing as how it was in a bag and I didn't have to break a seal.

I don't know. I read/watched too many rave reviews to smoke this objectionably. Seems like a very, very mild English/Balkan to me. However, I could definitely taste the Virginias. I don't know what Perique tastes like yet, so I couldn't say if I tasted it or not. (For reference, when I refer to an English, I mean a blend that imparts some taste of Latakia, so in any of my posts to come, when I say English, I mean containing Latakia).
Came home from the parents, where I picked up and opened my package.
Refreshed my memories of Latakia #1. I don't know, towards the end of my first tin, I had decided I loved this stuff. After smoking a couple bowls out of the new tin. Meh. I don't know. I think it was probably my fault, seeing as how I was impatient to try a couple different tobaccos before bed, thus causing me to puff ferociously to finish the bowl. Bad idea, I know. It also could be that English tobaccos just light, burn, and smoke differently than Virginia's and flake tobaccos, and I was smoking it like a flake. You tell me.
Tried the McClelland Black Woods Flake. I guess I spaced out when I hit the order button because I thought for sure this had Perique in it. Nope. All Virginias. Red and Black Stoved. Again... I'll have to smoke the tin before I decide. I could definitely taste the Virginia, but it a totally different Virginia taste than what I've experienced before. I don't know if it was back to back to back to back bowls of tobacco, but I felt pretty nauseous afterwards. Nicotine overload I bet.
Tried the Dunhill flake, which I smoked last night, and in between job sites this afternoon. Very good. I can tell you right now that when all is said and done, I'll be a Virginia man. I don't know, just how smoke should taste to me. It seems smoother and creamier than MacBaren's navy flake; lighter as well.
Anyway, that was last night. I spent half an hour staring at the Davidoff Flake Medallions trying to decide if I wanted to try it or not. (I had myself convinced I'd only be opening two or three tins before I ordered more.) Which brings us to the Now.
Just finished Solani's Aged Burley Flake. I have to say it's the only Burley I've smoked other than Carter Hall, Prince Albert, and Half & Half, and I have to say I like it. Strangely. I can't stand OTC tobaccos. At least USA OTC tobaccos. Just nasty stuff in my opinion. It had me thinking that I would hate anything with Burley in it.
I guess I like it because it tastes like... tobacco?... with a Burley center? That might be kind of confusing but it seems logical enough to me. The tin note is definitely cocoa. I'm excited to see what my girlfriend says about the room note.
... Well...
There you have it I suppose. I'm gonna grab a bite to eat while I dry out one of these Sam Gawith Navy Flakes. I'm not sure when I'm gonna get to the Flake Medallions,... but I imagine that it'll be sometime this evening. I plan on trying the Nightcap fairly soon, and possibly the 965, which I believe takes care of everything.
Except...
Peterson's University Flake. I'm keeping that sealed as long as possible ( you know, this aging stuff is quite difficult ). I've smoked three tins of that shit and all I can say is that it's bomb. Bomb diggity. I don't really dig aromatics, though I plan on sampling a few over time, but a good quality tobacco flavor with a nice subtle top flavoring is something I'll be searching out.
If you made it this far, Thanks. You guys kick ass.

Damn son, you weren't kidding anyone when you said you smoked a lot...
Funny that I haven't tried barely any of those on your list but I've got my sights on Dunhill Flake.
Nice haul, all the same. Enjoy it.

Great reviews, great pictures! Mine is here also! I will try to dig out the camera here shortly and post it up. I can't believe you didn't get anniversary cake! You need to try that if you like a true tobacco with fresh taste and no casings.

I'll put Anniversary Kake on my next order, John. I'm making my list, and checking it twice.
Lol Dave. I love those box opening videos. I've been thinking about doing one, but eh... seems like too much of a responsibility if my videos were to catch. Plus I've tried talking to my computer before and it's really freaking awkward.
And yeah Simenon, I wasn't. Something about pipe smoking makes me want to do it all the time. Dunhill flake is really good, I can already tell it'll be a staple of mine.
Smoking that Gawith Navy Flake now. Which has totally and irreparably damaged my idea of what a Navy Flake is. I know I'm not alone here. It's really good though, smooth, smoky, slow burning which I love.

Nice haul. I am a big fan of the Dunhill Flake and smoke it in a regular basis. I am not a burley fan but when I do get an urge I do go for the Solani.

That's what I'm thinking Cigr I know I won't smoke it throughout the day, but I think it'll be a nice change up when I'm in the mood for "something else".

Oh, and sorry to make you do it, but what did you get in bulk? I see a plug of some kind for sure.

Well let;'s see here. The Ennerdale is an acquired taste I must say. It is odd but flavorful and certainly unique. It is fruity, spicy and definitely aromatic but in flake form and you need to let it sit for about 1/2 hour on a plate before smoking it.
The plug does not exist. But you do see a twist or two! I plan to chop them up and mix a few items together. In fact I often mix my baccys once I figure out what they are like by themselves and then add others of similar taste or totally different taste just to see what happens ( I will explain below).

That Conn Choice is tasty as hell! NO nic though... you might want to think about mixing it with something with a bit of "kick"...

But of course Kris. You see that Honey and Chocolate? The bulk of choices I have in the nutty, chocolate, caramel, vanilla department? Oh yes my friend there will be blending! I will make a mean mocha-chino blend this weekend that will last a month or more with all that tasty goodness!

For a second there I thought your total order came out to $107.96. I thought what the hell did I do wrong? Lol.
I'll admit, I used to be part of the demographic that frowns upon smoking aromatics, but I've heard enough (though not many), good reviews to be pretty intrigued, actually.
The idea of (me) being able to smoke a tobacco that burns well, stays lit, burns long enough, is cool on the tongue, and tastes, even if mildy, like a dessert of some kind, is kind of fascinating.
But be warned!!

He who suggests 1Q to the one who is continually lost and found, shall suffer a fate so terrible it can not be mentioned upon the forum boards of "Pipes Magazine".com!!!

(I kid I kid, no terrible fates await, but I really can't stand 1Q. Sorry.)

1Q is just a smooth aromatic. I use it to tone down the more powerful blends I have that offend me. Call me a wimp but I have sensitive tastes and there are many blends out there of any kind that offer a thick, hot smoke that needs to be cooled down with something and 1Q does the trick but so does a few others I have from the local tobacconist.

One thing to seriously consider is what your smoking and what you smoke it in. If you get aromatics they are best in a giant (just sayin', cause it's true). But if your a heavy smoker of lat, perique and dark flakes and looking for pure tobacco flavor you should not put it in a giant. It's like putting a V8 in VW Bug. The aromatics need room to smoke and a big bowl allows for a cooler smoke which leads to a cool bowl, light taste but pure taste and a longer lasting bowl. Anytime I put aromatics in a regular bowl I get too much heat and gurgle in the bowl.
The black pipe and small churchwarden you see in the pictures I posted are what I use for my flakes and English blends. My two giants are reserved for - carmel, coffee, nutty aro's and the other for fruity, cinnamon, rummy aro's.
