This neat old boy came in today and I'm highly impressed, it's got an excellent blast, excellent shaping, and a truly excellent stem,

--- it has exceeded my expectations!
It's a rather odd pipe.

The entire shank is blasted,

I can't recall seeing a blast like this with the underside blasted too...

One one side it's stamped 59,

indicating it's probably a factory made pipe?

If it is, it came from a very good factory!

...and on the other side is one of the strangest stamps I've ever seen, I can't really make heads or tails of it and I'm quite bewildered,

-- I figured other eyes may be able to decipher this odd marking?
Any help or hints would be most appreciated!

I've never seen the stampings pressed directly into the blast before like on this pipe either?
Definitely an oddball!
I couldn't pass it up,

got a pretty good deal for such a nice pipe!

That's a tough one. From my perspective, I see a pipe in the logo with what seems to be wisp of smoke coming out of it. Other than that I see a "bow" or a letter of some sort.
kinda like this...

Good luck.

Lovely blast, maybe a fancy capital R? with the pipe and smoke as jason suggests? Could be a hand made pipe number 59?

THANK YOU!

Man, you made my day!
I would have never guessed, I was thinking it was Arabic or some weird other language LOL
I never saw the pipe, dammit,

now it's clear as a bell!
Like when I was little I never saw this hawk either,

I always thought it was some weird Pac Man or something LOL

I am totally stoked!
I knew when I felt the button that the stem had to be handmade, it was too just nice,

and the blast is extraordinary, in the Taylor-Ashton class of depth.
Sadly, Steve passed away in 2009.
I was completely unfamiliar with these pipes known as S&R Woodcrafts, and I'm glad such a fine example has come into my life, it's perfect for me and it's in very fine condition.
I found a great write-up here:

(by Bill Unger)

...and a couple of blasts from SP:

The # on the shank is actually a date code!

But I suck at math and can't really understand this...

Steve and Roswitha began dating their high-grade pipes (those that

cost over $35) in 1985. Using a base of 50, they stamp each S&R pipe with

a two-digit number. Thus a pipe stamped "45" would be made in 1995.

...what year would 59 be?
A couple more from SP...

Great looking pipe. I have four S&R's, three straight grains, all beautiful pipes and great smokers. You should be very pleased with yours. Pipes and Pleasures is an old fashioned pipe shop in Columbus, Ohio where the focus is on pipes and the staff are informed and friendly.

Al, that SG is a magnum! Such a beauty.
That would put it as a 2009 wouldn't it?

Thanks torque.
greg - good to hear they're known to be good smokers, the quality of craftmanship is undoubted.
