The recent post about seductive tobacco has me thinking about blends that lie on the other end of the spectrum.

I'd say the stinkiest blend I smoke regularly is Billy Budd, but I'm sure there are others out there that are way worse. Thoughts?

To me, all tobacco smells great. No stinkers at all. Now to SWMBO it's a little different story.

When I’m in a pipe shop and a guy comes in smoking an English house blend, the aroma ain’t great. My wife made negative comments about some old Tilbury I have open. McClelland Bombay court takes the prize though in my experience.

I usually smoke alone or with a cigar smoker, so I've never heard any comments on the smell of the smoke. As for the lingering stale smoke that sticks around on clothes or whatever, I think it all smells generally the same.

Burley Flake #1, while I love the flavor of this one while smoking it, the room note is that of a flatulent nursing home for men with colon disorders.

1792 smells like farting old men with cologne disorders. I like it.

Gawith Hoggarth Black Irish Twist has a pretty good reek to it. And I’ll second (or third) 1792.

Awesome! That was the first thing that leapt to mind. Well, the blend, not the mouse thing.

Gaslight smells a bit like a diaper fire, imo.

Oh, and the first time I smoked Semois, I loved it, but I kept checking my shoes. I could have sworn I had stepped in horse shit. "Where is that smell coming from?"

My wife hated Haunted Bookshop, she said it smelled like “burning shit”, since I smoke in the house, that tin went in the trash. She has only vetoed maybe 4 or 5 blends in our 20 years together, so I count myself quite lucky.

Observation: The stronger the stench from the tin, the better the taste of the smoke. YMMV and there could be exceptions.

I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Erinmore could be a good example of that. Then again, Chimney Smoke smells & smokes great, but it's a bulk.

The only blend to ever elicit a negative comment from my wife is MB HH Latakia Flake.

C&D Burley Flake #3 smelled like a bad batch of Velveeta when I popped the tin but smoked great.

I smoke several of the blends mentioned as stinkers -- Billy Budd, Old Joe Krantz, Tabac-Manil Semois. The most persistent complaints from spouses and other bystanders has been about Latakia. I can smell the stable sweepings in packaged Semois, but not in the taste nor in the room note; it just smells like a burley to me. Many but not all aromatics get good reviews, like SWRA or Three Star Blue.

I just smoked some D+R Cockstrong a couple hours ago and upon returning to the living room, she said I smelled horrible. I agreed and relocated to my study.

Apart from some Va/Burs that smell cigarette-y, Semois gets my vote. I enjoy the flavor but it is definitely reminiscent of barnyard to the nose.

I'm going to go with bayou night and black Irish. I love bayou night but I'm not a big fan of the black Irish. It starts out meaty and savory but the last third of the bowl is kinda nasty sometimes.

Bullshit..... Fire up a bowl of dried out Cotton Boll or Mammoth Cave.

The wife and family will be throwing lamps and end tables at you just to get you out of the house.

If memory serves me well 1792 Flake was a real stinker. I didn't care for the smell nor did I care for the smoke itself. My buddy thinks that Samuel Gawith Black XX stinks, but I like the aroma.

If we are being honest, nothing smells worse than cigarettes in my opinion. I have yet to come across a blend that stinks as much, although I have only tried a handful of them.

That is true. After a 1 1/2 hour smoke in the car, it only has a faint, nice smell of sweet virginia. One cigarette, 3 minutes, stinks it up so bad, it will take hours before it is back to it's pipesmelling self.

Yes I agree cigs. Are the worst, also some cheap machine cigars smell like actual poop to me. But as far as pipe tobacco goes, 99.5 out of 100 wives and daughters agree anything w latakia is by far the stinkiest, with perique as the runner up. And although I enjoy very much latakia smoke, the loose Tobacco smell is an acquired taste to say the least

The Vottis Pipe shop's English Blend I got a pound paint-can tin of during the winter of 1973-74 in Schenectady New York. It was strong enough that one night early in a cruise, while several of us were sitting around in the Deckies' berthing compartment talking and smoking (me the only one with a pipe going), a kid newly out of boot camp got up out of his rack on the other side of the compartment and came over and wrenched the pipe from my mouth, complaining that the room note was making his sea-sickness even worse than the cook's usual first-night-at-sea choice of a greasy pork meal (a special treat for those unaccustomed to sea sickness) had done for him.

I do admit that on occasion when lighting this Vottis English Blend, for a brief while it would smell as if someone had set fire to a liquid dishwashing soap, if that were even possible. But even on those occasions, once that odor went away in a minute or two, I could settle down to a pleasant smoke.

War Horse Bar. It stinks up the place whilst still in the sealed tin and can be smelled from your mail box. Once you light the stuff up its either love at first puff or recycled as a moth repellent!
