I have a gem series Ser Jacopo, however for some reason I can not get the stem back in. I removed the stem for cleaning purposes and when I went to insert it back in I was met with great rresistance. Can I use a lubricant like vasiline? Worried if something like that would eventually rott the briar?

Graphite (pencil lead) is No. One choice. But could it also have been subject to moisture? (the stummel, specifically, the mortise where the tenon goes.) Moisture from cleaning or ambient levels. If so, drying it a bit may be all that's needed.
