Good day good people!

I have a problem. I bought a pipe for 25$ thinking it was a Gresham.
But as I looked at it, I starting researching the marks on it. At first I thought 1997. But the silver looks older.

What I think I have found out:

Birmingham, Sterling Silver. And "first quality" mark on the pipe itself.
Can someone please help me date this?

Can you do a closeup of the hallmark?
Here's the X range for Birmingham, I agree, there's no way that pipe was made in 1997.

Wow!

If you compare to the link, it looks like 1897. I don't know of I dare refurbishing this myself...

Probably a bone screw tenon. I wouldn't make a habit of taking it apart...

1897 is correct for the year hallmark. That is not a screw-in tenon. It's a standard friction tenon what has gotten stuck in the mortise and has subsequently come unscrewed from the stem. You can either leave it alone, or free the stuck tenon by dripping alcohol into the mortise, a few drops at a time, for about 20 minutes, to loosen up the crud that is holding the tenon stuck. Then screw the stem back on and very GENTLY continue to twist to see if the tenon has become unstuck. If not, continue to drip alcohol into the area between the tenon and the mortise until the gunk softens enough for the tenon to rotate, and rotate it out. Once out, you can clean out the mortise and clean off the tenon. The benefit is that you will not have stale deposits spoiling your smokes.
The G over N S in a diamond is a maker's mark, but not one that i could identify quickly.
Nice looking piece!
