Just a quick note whilst smoking my pipe I notice myself closing my throat and exhaling through my nose after a draw of tobacco. Is this inhaling?I used to smoke cigarettes and remember totally breathing smoke in like a breath, I do not do this anymore with a pipe.Is the first description called a French inhale? And is it better to keep smoking this way then to totally inhale.?

I believe the "French Inhale," waterfall or snap inhale, is most used by dopers and is a technique which involves bringing the smoke back into the mouth as it leaves the nose. Most pipe smokers take the smoke into the mouth and not down into the lungs. I let it flow through my nose as the moist surfaces absorb even more of the flavor and nicotine. The nose is very important as it augments the flavor tasted on the tongue.
