why is it that in my state(Michigan) you can not smoke in a cigar lounge even though that lounge sells pipes and pipe tobacco and when you get the ok from the manager to smoke there you get the uppity eliteist attitude of " well its not a cigar so he has no right to be in here smoking that" even thought the cigar tax and pipe tobacco tax is the same in most states

There's a B&M I hit once a month or so to share a pipe with a friend. They're more of a cigar shop, but they don't mind us hanging out in the lounge and puffing on our pipes. We usually pick up a tin or cheap cigar on the way out.

A few us meet in a "cigar Bar" once a month to smoke pipes and have not encountered any disparaging looks or remarks. In fact, the manager has been very welcoming of us and asks questions about what we're smoking. So, I guess we're lucky in that respect. The B&M I hang at is also a place where pipes and cigars coexist peacefully, as it should be. As a cigar and pipe smoker I appreciate places that abide both hobbies.

Never understood this whole "elitist" attitude people have about pipes vs. cigars. I love the smell of both but can't stand cigarettes. Most people I know can't stand the nails smell. I've been chased out of establishments in the past, before you couldn't smoke in public in Wa, for wanting to light up a stogie. So I said to hell with all of them and just smoke by myself on my porch and read a good book. Much better company anyway.

I've never had a problem smoking a pipe in a cigar lounge as long as I buy something....and I do. It's like paying for your chair. And zI've only seen maybe one or two pipe smokers in say 10 years..

and on top of that where I usually smoke is in the private members lounge which is $100/month which I cant afford to pay but im friends with the managers there. that's another reason the ones who give me looks don't like me being back there I guess that goes with the eliteist attitude.

The B&M in my Michigan college town allows pipe smoking in the lounge, or at least in the case of frequent customers like my friends and I. Granted, they sell pipes and pipe tobacco in addition to cigars, but then they also offer cigs, and those are not allowed in the lounge (unless you're the cashier, apparently...). I'm there pretty often in the winter. I smoke cigars there as well, in which case I buy one and smoke it on the spot. It all depends on who I'm with and what we're in the mood for.

I do however know of a few shops where I could not get away with that.

The Viking Pipe Club of Saint Louis meets at Brennan's in St. Louis which has a smoking lounge. They have always been very good to us because a couple of us are members of the Cigar Lounge. We also have our meetings on a Tuesday night, when the lounge is usually otherwise unused. Most of the Cigar smokers I've talked to there have a pipe or two and are interested. We've even had quite a bit of crossover from people who were there to smoke a cigar and met one of us smoking a pipe and became interested.

There's a B&M in my area (southern N.H)that has a few locations. Two have a smoking lounge. The B7M focuses on cigars (owner has his own brand) but also sells pipes & pipe tobacco. One of the employees is the "resident pipe expert" and is working on getting more pipes etc in the store. I've never had a problem soking in the cigar lounge.

My Cigar club is a B&M but no pipe smoking, really just a mobbed up front complete with Bocci court. The new B&M that just opened is national chain and pipe friendly. Still have to get there, but the weather is killing me. But tommorow is the plan, it's a fully loaded lounge. This damn Escudo talk has drained my funds, so won't be able to "throw" the support I wanted this time.

One reason may just be the confusion about Michigan's ridiculous smoking ban. The exceptions to the smoking ban are "cigar bars" (which are establishments that have a liquor license and may also serve food, but who make 10% or more of their income from retail sales of cigars) and tobacco specialty stores. The exemption for cigar bars states that no other tobacco products other than cigars may be smoked in cigar bars. I think the intent was to exclude cigarettes to avoid giving cigar bars an advantage over regular bars, where smoking is banned outright, but the drafters just never gave much thought to pipes. Tobacco specialty stores can allow any kind of smoking, and it's up to the specific store to determine what is or is not allowed. I've been to one B&M that did not allow pipe smoking, but they only sold cigars. If a place sold pipes and pipe tobacco, seems pretty stupid not to allow pipe smoking on the premises.
The other exemption is for casinos. Apparently the righteous don't mind banning smoking, but only for those that lack deep pockets for effective lobbying.

Im pretty lucky cause my B&M has a smoking lounge and the shop rules allow for both pipe smokers and cigar smokers. A couple of the cigar guys that are hardcore regulars (see also: cigar snobs), kind of bust our balls when we go in there with our pipes but most of the guys are actually pretty cool about it. I normally only go in there in the middle of the week and there's hardly ever anyone there, but it's a pleasant atmosphere overall.

I have a cigar and pipe tobacco shop near my office. I have gone into this store several times to buy my brother-in-law some cigars. While there a several cigar smokers I have never discovered a pipe smoker in this shop. Personally, when I just walk through this shop to buy a few cigars for my relative I leave with my clothes, hair and even my socks reeking of cigar smoke. I know that I can smoke my pipe in this shop but I wouldn't want to since part of smoking a pipe is your nose and any pipe tobacco I smoked there would smell like cigars.

Never experienced any negativity toward me at any B&M for smoking a pipe.
But if I were to pony up a hundred bones for a membership and some fella came with out dropping a dime. I would probably be somewhat hostile toward him.

I cannot taste my pipe in the presence of cigar smoke. Does anyone else have this problem?

At my local B&M there's just a 10$ minimum purchase to smoke in the lounge. Plus I don't shop there and my porch or living room is much better anyways.
