Quite often I see the word hobby used in connection with pipe smoking. Has me curious.
Collecting and refurbishing pipes or collecting and analyzing older tobacco blends are pursuits that I can easily understand as hobbies.
But the day to day smoking of a pipe referred to as a hobby causes me to stumble.
While I can appreciate where this may more than likely be a fault in my own perceptions of what I'm reading, still...

I thoroughly enjoy acquiring older or distinctive to me pipes and cleaning them and then of course using them. This could be seen as a hobby aspect for sure.
    But.

I smoke them as a choice over cigarettes for the delivery of nicotine.

A Life Style Choice then, certainly not a hobby.

Curious as to the rest of you here, hobby or life style choice?

    Snus, snuff and briar.

There are days when I certainly feel that the ritual and nicotine delivery improves my quality of life, be it as a painkiller, a stress reliever, or just something to occupy my mind to forget about my daily stresses. I have also found that I can go days or even weeks without a smoke and feel no ill side effects. I certainly love collecting different pipe shapes and styles and refurbishing those old junkers, and I also get a thrill out of increasing my tobacco stash, and I have amassed a number of blends that I intend to both smoke immediately and let sit in the cellar to fully appreciate them. Hobby or life choice? I guess I am a bit torn between both some days.

I suppose I see it as a hobby even though I smoke every day. I love the research, care, deliberation, ritual (hey, I'm a priest what did you expect?)as much as or more than the nic fix. If it was mostly a matter of getting the nicotine, I'd probably stick with cigarettes.

I don't go for high nic blends. True, all tobacco has nicotine, but I smoke for flavor, aroma and a relaxing atmosphere more than anything. I enjoy it, but it doesn't define who I am. I ride a motorcyle too and though some may refer to me as a "biker" I conider myself a rocker who rides a bike. I'm not involved in a so-called "motorcycle lifestyle". I might have been closer to that when I didn't have a car, but I consider riding and smoking both hobby activites.

BTW, I'm not a badass, I'm just socially awkward. – BillyZoom

i too, enjoy finding and buying and refurbishing pipes that i find at fleamarkets and antique stores, or even buying off e-bay, so in this respect only, its a hobby. but the act of smoking day to day is a tobacco and nicotine addiction. The pipe is just my preferable means of delivering that addiction. As far as collecting tobaccos, that is just a "try this new taste or flavor experience"

Now i gotta larn how to reed and rite good

I am an ex nail smoker so i started out for the high nic fix. I found that I am now searching for the best tasting blend i can find or create. Yet I go through about 3/4 of an ounce a day, with work breaks and trying to get away from the wife and kids for just that small moment of peace and relaxation, to try and get the work day out of my head. So I guess I would say its both a hobby collecting the tools and the smoke and it a life style of release.

If you can't pack it, light it, and smoke it then why do it. It's a dieing art that must be rekindled in all of us as fortold by our forefathers.

Words to live by for all pipe smokers.

As I have been (very happily) enslaved to Nicotine for the past seventeen-years, I would have to say that pipe-smoking - nay, all forms of tobacco use - are a lifestyle rather than a hobby for me.

That said, I do consider collecting pipes, different blends, and accoutrements to be more of a hobby than the actual smoking. After all, I don't know many people who collect cigarettes (although I do have to admit to having more than a couple of decks of foreign butts in my man-cave) or cigar stubs.

I collect pipes, but smoking is just a habit. A worthwhile habit, but still just a habit.

Seems the majority so far see this as a combination of hobby and lifestyle. Not that terribly surprising really! (-:

I'm new at it so, I guess I'm not really sure. I'm still finding my way. I don't require nicotine though. I think I enjoy the taste and the relaxation that I can (sometimes) get from a smoke. And I sure do enjoy the heck out of all the discussion/complexity/debate/hunt for baccy and pipes/history aspect of pipe smoking. The pursuit of the perfect smoke is half the fun for me.

yeah I'm gonna hafta go with both myself I smoke, cigs, cigars and pipes, although lately the cigs have been giving way to pipes and cigars both of which I consider hobbies. I mean I keep neat looking cigar rings and I am really starting to enjoy my collecting/refurbishing of pipes so yeah both for sure.

I can relate to that. I'm the kind of person that I don't even bother to smoke unless I'm going to have some time to sit and enjoy it. I've started to settle into a couple favorite baccys, but each new flavor is still an adventure. I hope we will always have that luxury!

That's true for me also OTD. The pipe is my preferred nicotine delivery system!

My hobby is collecting, restoring, refinishing and making pipes and tampers.

I'm another one who sees the smoking as a lifestyle choice and the collecting part as a hobby. Of course both TAD & PAD could also be seen as addictions, good addictions in my opinion.

Pipe smoking is not a hobby or Life style choice, whatever that means? Pipe smoking is just what it is, pipe smoking, a method and medium for enjoying a tobbaco product.

I am not sure what to consider myself. I do not smoke because I want the nicotine, at least primarily, nor do I change my life to fit in smoking so I would not call it a lifestyle. On the other hand I do enjoy collecting pipes and tobacco, but I would not collect them if I didn't smoke them. I also do enjoy the effects that nicotine have even if I stick to low nicotine blends for the most part, so it is not a hobby. To me it is like drinking a good beer or glass of wine. I do it because I like to and I find enjoyment in finding a great tasting beer, wine, tobacco. So I guess I'm just going to call a source of enjoyment.

I am with you Sherlock. I do not like nicotine at all but, I do enjoy pipe smoking in the Fall and Winter. And, only once a week or less. Maybe a hobby for me.

I do find it interesting that some people do not like nicotine. I love the stuff, but I guess one can enjoy the flavor of tobacco without the nicotine. As much as i enjoy my pipes and smoking them, I take nasal snuff all day at work, when i need some vitamin N.

I think it's both a hobby and a life choice. The collecting and displaying of pipes clearly fit the description of a hobby. The smoking of the pipe is a life choice. What makes pipes diffent from cigars or cigarettes is that only pipes include that faucet that constitutes a hobby. The others are just life choices.

    Hey there Marc.
Framing the smoking of a pipe as a "Life Style Choice" is just fancying up what you are saying with the words method and medium.

What I had hoped to express in my OP was that I use tobacco because I want/need the nicotine. This need in turn is one aspect of my life. Or, one aspect of my life style.
I choose the pipe as my "method".
    A "Life Style Choice".
In as much as I feel I need the tobacco I find it hard to refer to my use of the pipe as a hobby. Others though do refer to the smoking of a pipe as a hobby, hence the original question,"Curious as to the rest of you here, hobby or life style choice?"

I've been trying to re-establish what pipe smoking is to me...

In early October, after 16+ years, I finally quit the cigs (cold turkey)! I decided that I didn't want to trade one form of nicotine for another...so I didn't use any other nicotine delivery method (gum, patch, or pipes).

After 6-7 weeks I decided to try my pipes again...although hesitantly. I really do not want to have to fight the addiction again. Since then, I might smoke a couple pipes a week...then go a couple weeks without smoking them.

I would love for pipe smoking to be a hobby for me...but I'm still trying to decide whether to continue or to quit tobacco altogether. Time will tell!

Are you a pipe smoker or just someone who smokes a pipe?
For some it's a hobby. For some it's a life style. For Marc it may be neither. For many it's both.

Sailing my boat is a hobby: seamanship is a lifestyle. The same idea might hold true for any of my other hobbies/life choices.

I am fortunate that I do not have to work for a living, but the life I have chosen is a lot of work.

    I am a Christian. I am a pipe smoker. I am a sailor. I am a reader. I am a struggling artist/musician. I am...
I'd say that for me, my life style is just the sum of my hobbies and interests - it's the sum of all I do.

I enjoy toabaco in all forms and the pipe has many unique flavors to enjoy . With a cigar or cigarette , snuff or chew there is not much left over to collect . But a pipe requires tools of the trade and it quickly turns into a full blown hobby . You buy blends you dont not like and cellar them . You find blends you like and cellar them too. A pipe collection needs a rack and cleaners and tools . The next thing you know as the years pass you find many pipes that catch your eye .PAD@TAD wants become needs and just one more pipe and I will be happy . C'mon, get up, come on get down with the sickness .

To me, a hobby is something you do to pass the time enjoyably. For me, pipe smoking has a greater significance than that. It is a connection with a long line of men that goes back centuries, pipe smoking is relaxation, a tool for contemplation, but most of all a choice. There was no peer pressure to smoke a pipe, no one smokes a pipe to impress chicks, I chose the pipe because it called to me, I really do not know why, pipes just seemed to fit my personality. I bought my first pipe, a Dr. Grabow, when I was 16. I really can't explain why I stuck with it and got past all the tongue bite, some really god-awful tobaccos etc. I just seemed to know this was meant for me.

I've never been a cigarette or cigar smoker. So, it's not a lifestyle thing in that way for me. I'd probably say it's a hobby. I love collecting the different pipe styles and blends and I love smoking them. I try to have one or two bowls a day, but if I go a day or two without one it isn't the end of the world. Since I only smoke aromatics it's a way for me to have a nice relaxing dessert or snack without the calories lol.

    Well. Hmmm.
Using tobacco is a choice we make, no matter what form or forms we take it in. So it's a "life choice" for all of us. We may narrow that choice as to how we use the weed - we may eschew cigs completely, for example, and use all other forms, just smoke a pipe, whatever.

If we are pipe smokers, we may use the pipe simply as a way to get out nic fix. The old-timer with his big can of Granger, say, who smoked one pipe, didn't worry about it, threw it away after a while and got a new one - this is the classic example.

We become hobbyists, in my view, when we move beyond that - we try to learn about pipes and tobacco, we seek out certain blends or pipes, we build tobacco cellars, make pipe racks - whatever. That makes me a hobbyist - but it's one hobby amongst several.

I was "just" a pipe smoker for about 30 years, then I stumbled upon the world of pipe shows and clubs. Now I am both a pipe smoker (life choice for 42 years) and an avid member of the pipe hobby collecting pipes, tobaccos and accessories, and attending several shows and regular Chicago Pipe Club meetings. I very much enjoy both the life choice and the hobby.

Great views expressed here by all. Has certainly given me food for thought as to why I "stumble" on the hobby aspect!

I kept refusing to consider myself a hobbyist when it comes to my choice to smoke a pipe as I read through this thread, took more effort the farther I went though!

Juds' reasoning turned the tables on me though.

...We become hobbyists, in my view, when we move beyond that - we try to learn about pipes and tobacco, we seek out certain blends or pipes,...
    Hi, my name is Brian and I am a pipe smoking hobbyist. By choice (-;

Few of us, myself included now, can answer this in a black and white fashion it seems.
Life Style choice and Hobby, both fit what we're up to rather just one or the other.

So the next time I see someone use the words "This hobby of ours" in a post I don't think I'll pause and stumble over a choice of words (-:

Pipe smoking is kind of unusual for me. I've never been a smoker. Never knew anyone that smoked a pipe or cigar. Pipes just sorta called to me too. I picked it up one day, lit a bowl and bam- it worked. I am still a newbie and I don't smoke everyday but I enjoy it and look forward to the next one. I'm not sure if it's a hobby or not, I never questioned it.

As for me and the tobacco, That will be a life necessity just as food is. The pipe part of the equation will be the hobby, which has become a mind crippling obsession.

For me it's a hobby. Travelling to pipe shows, meeting and hanging out with carvers, taking pipe-making seminars, it's all part of the fun. I have several good friends whom I've met through pipe shows, and when we get back together once a year, it's like a family reunion.

I can put the pipe down for days and days, even weeks, without feeling an "addiction" kick in.

A little bit of both, I have been trying to cut down on cigs and actually have! but on the other hand pipe smoking is a great way to unwind and relax, so it is a 50/50 gig...

Both I suppose. Even as a youngster I found pipe smokers to be more interesting. And I've always like the idea of doing something different.

    Yeah... what Jud said !

"The fact is, squire, the moment a man takes to a pipe, he becomes a philosopher. It's the poor man's friend; it calms the mind, soothes the temper, and makes a man patient under difficulties. It has made more good men, good husbands, kind masters, indulgent fathers, than any other blessed thing on this universal earth."

I'll tell you what my tobacconist said:

Jud - Truly you are an intelligent man...

For me it is much more a hobby than a life style choice...though I do admit it is both. The research and selection have an immense appeal. I am not a nicotine addict (yet!). To me, the nicotine is merely a nice side effect at this point. I do not consume on a regular enough basis to consider the nicotine content of the tobacco as a necessity (though the nic-kick is very intense incentive). There are just so many flavors and varieties that make this such an intriguing endeavor. I would agree with those who say that merely contemplating this question is a bit of a contradiction. I do it because I like it. Some tobaccos taste phenomenal, and the nicotine sensation is very relaxing and enjoyable. Perhaps the enjoyment of the pipe smoking is enough without labeling it. I must admit I also feel the same way about the slow-smoking competitions I have heard about...why make it competitive? Why worry about the nature of it? For American Indians it was (and still is) a religious experience. That seems fitting enough for me.

I had been smoking cigarettes for the past 14 years. I started the pipe to put down the nails. To smoke cigarettes is IMHO a lifestyle. Me using the pipe to put down the nails, also makes it IMHO a lifestyle as well. I look for bacs that do have a good nic hit. But I also like milder smokes too.

And while I was smoking nails, I had to have a cigarette. With the pipe, it's as if my mind is will to stop nagging me for the nic fix, because the pipe is much more fulfilling. And I can wait for it, because the payout of the pipe takes longer to get but is worth much more that what the nails were offering me.

That and pipes are a lot of fun. I've ordered bac off of the web and my boss is a pipe smoker too so we've got that to talk about, not just work.

I fear my enthusiasm flags when real work is demanded of me.

    I am a Christian. I am a pipe smoker. I am a sailor. I am a reader. I am a struggling artist/musician. I am...
I'd say that for me, my life style is just the sum of my hobbies and interests - it's the sum of all I do.

I really like the way you put that, Phillip. I am kind of in the same boat. Pipe smoking is probably more of a hobby for me (along with collecting, refurbishing and now, pipe making [I'm beginning to attempt that, at least]), but I consider it as part of a lifestyle that I would say is broader than any one thing.

For lack of a better phrase, I would say that lifestyle could be summed up as, "the gentlemanly pursuits." These (for me) include (but are not limited to): politeness, good manners, having integrity (especially, when I give my word), a literary practice (meaning, I try to read a book once in awhile--so as to stay open minded about the world, and people), optimism, artistic pursuits (which can mean anything from looking at a painting to creating something with my hands--whether I think it's "good" or not), a good work ethic, a healthy suspicion of my government (and the knowledge that nothing they can do, short of imprisoning me, really affects my day to day happiness--unless I let it), curiosity about the world (and its people), and practicing the golden rule...among other things.

I say this, not to distinguish myself, as I see that many of my pipe smoking brethren practice these "pursuits," but just to point out that many of us have these traits in common. The fact that OTD even asked the question displays that curiosity about the mysteries of pipe smoking, whether you see it as a hobby or a lifestyle.

I guess what I'm trying to say is (which many here have already said more eloquently), that's a hard question to answer. Nonetheless, it's a great question to ask. But, I think Simnett's tobacconist really hit the nail on the head...

Cigarettes are an addiction. Cigars are a hobby. Pipes are a religion.

I'm off to go practice my religion...

I smoke a pipe on my own terms. It's a hobby.

I'm in both camps, though I treasure and revere my smoking instruments so I'm more in the hobby camp.

    Hobby or pastime for me.

I have never smoked cigarettes at all. I have smoked pipes on and off for 30 years, in the past year re-engaging on a more concentrated level than for the last 15 years (when I paid more attention to cigars). I still smoke cigars from time to time -- living in Miami makes it easy to get very good cigars for not a ton of money -- but I consider my enjoyment of them one- or two-dimensional compared to the deeper aspect available in pipe smoking.

Pipes appeal to me as objects qua objects -- examples of art and craftsmanship that I can enjoy. I like the ritual of smoking a pipe and find it relaxing and pleasurable. I like the wide variety of pipes and tobaccos that provide a fascinating subject to study. My favorite tobaccos taste great without adding any calories.

Nicotine delivery is no part of the equation. I never feel the "need" for a pipe or cigar to get a nicotine delivery. If circumstances preclude smoking for some days in a row, I never experience a craving. Some tobaccos deliver a fair amount if nicotine, and that's alright. But it's nothing I seek and most tobaccos I smoke don't have a noticeable effect.
