My last PAD binge included 3 pipes that are marked "straight grain" and actually have some good grain to go with the designation. They are an Ehrlich, a Bari and a P. Larsen. The Ehrlich will have to wait until I have more cleaning supplies but the Bari and Larsen are ready. Last night I couldn't wait so I fired up the Larsen with some Pelican and went to the garage. This pipe by all rights should smoke badly. The draw is a little tight, not terrible but tight, and the tenon gap is significant. Instead of smoking badly, it gave me a quite pleasurable, cool smoke with lots of flavor and only one pipe cleaner needed the whole time. The horn stem turned out to be quite comfortable and the weight was light enough it was easy to clench. I'll have to give it a few more smokes to be sure but I think I've got a winner.
Here's a pic again in case you missed the ID thread for it.
