    I'm very new to this.

Bought 2 pipes that have small metal inserts (like tiny sink strainers) in the bowls. What are they called, and does anyone sell them separately?

They sell little round pipe screens in head shops, if you're near one. Kitchen faucet aerators are little round screens so the hardware store should have some too.

That sounds like a "screen" used in a marijuana pipe.

Do the screens help keep you from sucking in the tobacco seeds?

They're called pipe screens & are designed to keep the tobacco &/or ash(usually finely textured stuff) from slipping through & getting sucked into your mouth. Second question,m yeah, absolutely. You can pick them up either at head or vape shops, or a number of the online tobacco suppliers like smokingpipes.com, pipesand igars.com, or coupojoes, etc.

Seeds you won't have to worry about, but finely cut tobacco does tend to have a habit of going through the stem & landing =on your tongue. The screens are specifically designed to prevent that.

Yeah I've never used one in my tobacco pipe smoking days. That's for other stuff.

And I've never smoked tobacco with seeds in it.

That's what I was thinking when I mentioned head shops. I mean, I wouldn't know about that myself. My, um, friend...yeah definitely my friend told me about it.

let's not be presumptuous here. Well, you can but I'm not

The first pipe I bought had a metal basket in the chamber. I wanted a cheap pipe (for smoking pipe tobacco) and simply didn't know any better.

Seems to be a bit of confusion as to what the OP is talking about, though.

I'm talking about these, but I'm not sure the OP is.

This from the link above.... Says it's a tool, but looks more like an accessory.

I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

I've never heard of those for a tobacco pipe. At first I thought the OP was talking about a windcap.

I have seen on amazon with the inexpensive tobacco pipe sets they come with some of those wire mesh balls.

You can also get small carbon granules to put at the bottom of the pipe bowl, below the screen.

    like an in-bowl filter? Interesting.

    cheap plastic pipes

call me old fashioned, but plastic pipes are for plumbing not smoking.

Its a modern iteration of the stuff people used to put in their meerschaum pipes to act as a 'Coloring Bowl' which caused that strange two tone on old meerschaum pipes.

As the tobacco plants used for product have the seed-bearing part lopped off part-way through the growing season in order to make each plant not intended for seed production put it's "efforts" into growing the leaves, I find it doubtful that any of us have ever smoked tobacco seeds unaware.

I have a savinelli I use a screen in. I use it because the cake started to crack at the bottom. It works well and nothing gets caught in the crack anymore. Other than that use, I don’t see why you would need to use a screen.

I've read of meerschaum chips being placed at the bottom of tobacco chambers as a kind of debris catcher.

balkisobrains still hangs out here, tried this out ... how did that experiment fare? Still use them?

You can save money by putting these a little above the bottom of the bowl. That way if you do not smoke the dottle, you do not pay for it. Amazon has them much cheaper than pipe shops.
