These four 60s Ropps have factory-stamped vulcanite stems. While 6 inches in length, they are small and light enough to go in a breast or inside suitcoat pocket, per the era.
Here are my leather-covered 60s Ropps, like the ones above, were acquired unsmoked. Again, Ropp vulcanite stems. The bent one is 9mm.
This army mount Ropp is stamped "Ariane", so likely from the 70s commemorating the European Space Agency commercial satellite program. Also fitted with a 9mm vulcanite stem.

Also, what is the idea behind the leather covered pipes such as the ones posted by snowyowl? Are they meant for lunting? As in protection from drops etc?

This had been discussed here before, but still an 'oldie-but-a-goodie' (DJ term from the 50s and 60s).
Returning from WWII, soldiers returned to the US with these pipes. And they became a thing/trend.
Cufflinks, ties, Sinatra, leather-covered steering wheels, so the feel of nice leather in the hand and pocket.
I coveted the first one of these pipes I saw in the late 60s.
Finally got one... in 2005, unsmoked. Took me back.

What, no love for the old cherry wood pipes? I find these rather unique and enjoy smoking mine about as much as any pipe if I'm in the mood.
Mine has seen some use, has a replacement stem and a silver repair band. It's kind of rough around the edges, but smokes just fine, and looks a little different than most of them.
