I posted about my cabinet under another topic (show us your pipe rack or cabinet) but I also wanted to see what others have done from scratch. This was my first substantial woodworking project and it took me quite some time but I learned a lot in the process. It was also the most fun I've had working on something in a while and my son helped which was a lot of fun. Mine is made out of pine except the back which I don't remember what kind of wood it is. Everything got sanded, 2 coats of stain and 2 coats of polyurethane. It holds 51 pipes, which gives me ample space to expand, and it has 2 plexiglass sliding doors on the top for the pipes and 2 on the bottom for the accessories which keeps everything dust free.
I would love to see what others on the forum have made so show off your homemade gear.

Very nice. The staining on the pine turned out well. I see you have a shop helper. Good to get them involved young. Woodworking is a dying profession and we need to get the young ones involved.

darjones- Great ideas and great looking. I forget about driftwood it makes for a very organic look, I may have to try making something out of some. The fork tamper is another cool idea! I need start thinking more creatively and outside the box, there are probably a ton things around the house and thrift stores ect. that could be re-purposed for pipe gear.

gecko13-thanks for the compliment I was very happy with the look of the stain. I fondly remember "working" with my dad in his shop when I was a kid and now I have the joy of sharing that with my son.

I've made a few tampers. I'm nowhere near as talented as some of the guys here though. I have an idea in my head for a rack to hold my two calabashes. I plan to make it once the weather warms up.
I made these from wood blanks with a bench grinder and a dremal:

I made these from twigs using a pocket knife and a few small woodcarving tools:

Uberam3rica- nice tampers! I've been thinking about making one recently and think I've just been inspired.

A good friend of mine (who is also an awesome woodworker) was over last week and he noticed I do not have a pipe rack so we got to talking and looking around on the interwebs and he is going to build me a pipe rack. He just asked me what style and how I want it to look. Upscale, pristine and nice, or old and rustic. I chose old and rustic for 16-18 pipes and a little shelf on the bottom for the accesories and odds and ends. Texting him today and he is going to start it next weekend :D

I will try to upload pics. I have an older computer and BlackBerry Desktop thing wont work on my machine and I don't have a data plan to send email through the phone. I will get them uploaded eventually lol

Its nothing fancy, just a scrap of 2x6 hacked at with a dremel to accentuate the grain and finished with olive oil, it holds a pipe and a pipe nail.

ejames, those are GREAT stands. I actually have a few knots from some wood I was splitting last year and saved for some reason. I knew I wanted to use them for something and that just inspired me.
How did you get the antlers to stay put?
