Ok, so I used everclear to get the shellac off and on the side I started with it was going fine. However the other side of the bowl turned into a land of fills. Giant fills that just fell out as the everclear took the shellac off. So I kept going so I could see how bad it was, and I'm sad to say it was bad. Any suggestions on what to do with this now, short of trying to fill the holes/canyons/pits/crevices/gaps?

I like it as-is. Clean it up a bit more and do a nice contrast finish on it.
That is a lot of fills, though. Got a "before" picture?

I don't know, I want to reply with the utmost of respect. I don't how much you paid for that or if it holds any sentimental value to you, but if those are indeed fills, then I'd do as woodsroad said or if it doesn't hold any sentimental value, chuck it and seek out pipes of better quality, there are many out there for well under $140 that won't crumble away. I just couldn't deal with that situation there.
Was that originally a rusticated pipe or did that reveal itself upon application of the Everclear? I'm not certain it was a smooth pipe to begin with.
If indeed they are all fills and not some kind of rustication/tooling, of which I have seen many, then if that's what you like, that's great and all the best however, if putty was used to smooth out and conceal all of that and you bought it under the assumption that it was a smooth pipe, then just, WOW!
Sorry brother!

I believe it looked similar to that beforehand right? At this point, you can't even tell where there fills are. Wax that baby.

I think I paid $8.00 for the pipe so not an giant loss and pretty sure the seller did not know since it was all covered in shellac. But here a before picture. I think I may just stain it/polish it up and see how it turns out.

I kind of like the cratery bastard. Has a kind of Danny Trejo/Edward James Olmos vibe to it. I'd do a contrast stain like Woods suggested and smoke on!

Ok, so thought I would share the finished result. Sanded it from 320 up to 1200. Then stained it twice with two different browns. Sanded it again from 320 up to 1200. Then polished it up with Halcyon. So it does look better but still just disappointed. Not sure I even want to smoke it.

Beauty is only skin deep, they say, but ugly (which this pipe is) goes right down to the bone.
Sorry dude.
