There must have been serious local issues to even evoke this referendum. Interestingly, everyone thought the lowering of the voting age to 16 would favor the 'Yes' vote, that is to say, for independence. But many of the young'uns were more pro-No than the older voters. I wonder if they also have a higher percentage of pipe smoking (or will have)? Maybe there's still hope for us over there across the pond.

If Texas can stay in its union, Scotland can stay in its own. They both get all of the benefits and still

remain worlds of their own. No one will ever make a New Englander out of a Texan, and no one will

ever make an Englishman out of a Scot, however anyone votes. When you get to Scotland, the tour guides

and kilted guards give you to understand immediately that you aren't in England anymore. And that's that.

UK, sure. Scotland's still there and Scottish as ever, and ever, and evermore.

I think it may have been Queen Victoria (remember, synonymous with prudishness) whose closest friend in

widowhood was her faith Scottish servant Mr. Brown who ever got the English and Scots stuck on each other.

As an man with a history degree, I was very cognizant of the background of the issue. I watched this vote with a healthy dose of trepidation as a vote for independence would be a repudiation of Union and all the advantages that came with it. I mean, the entire Scottish enlightenment - and thus the foundation of all American political thought through the influence they exercised on the thinking of our founding fathers - was predicated on the advantages ushered in by Union.
I can't believe that the Scots would trade the concrete advantages they've gained from three hundred years of Union for the vague promises and idealized chimera of an independence state. This latest round of independence agitation seemed predicated on nothing more than dissatisfaction with the current government. Political dissatisfaction of this minor sort seems an asinine reason to seek to undo three centuries of intimate entanglement with their southern brothers...
Thanks be to God that, as @papipeguy put it,
Sound minds prevailed.

Like most things, if this was going to be done, it should be done sooner than later.
With that said, I'm glad that Better Together prevailed. Sometimes (even usually), doing something for the sake of doing something is NOT the correct course of action.
I can expound on this if anyone really wants my opinion but doesn't this discussion fall under politics and is, ipso facto, verboten?

Such a shock...it failed even after Landscaper Willie's strident endorsement.

Well thats it folks. I just loved the fact that Salmond resigned. These type of single issue parties always enjoy a high water mark and then implode. I am thinking here of the Chartists, UK Communist Party and even Mosley and private army and fascist party. They are all driven by and around single issues and usually a single charismatic leader. Without that component they quickly implode and the electorate become bored as everything returns to the status quo. The SNP was particularly nasty as it was formed in the 1930s and is in essence a poor copy of a European National Socialist party. I hate ethnocentric politics as it is but a short stepping stone to men in very smart uniforms and right arm salutes, and I am not talking about hailing a NY taxi here guys!

As long as no one tried to nationalize the distilleries I had nothing else at stake on the outcome.

As a Cajun I should not be commenting on this but I thought of my sadly departed Favorite singer Amy Winehouse and the little diddle came to mind. They want to take me out the UK, I said NO NO NO.

Brad, I'm glad you broke the ice by admitting you liked Amy Winehouse. She was one of my favorite singers/songwriters too. But every time I mentioned I liked her people would look at me like I was nuts. Maybe her life was a train wreck, but there was no denying her talent. So I guess I'll tip a scotch to her tonight, and think about the country of one of my favorite drinks.
