I don't see this as a big deal. I would like your opinions though.
I received an order from P&C yesterday and one of the tins is SG Black Forest (date code 19 253) which I believe is from late 2016. Upon opening the tin I noticed rust in all four corners. The tobacco is moist in the center and very dry around the edges. I dry my tobacco before every smoke, so I don't see this as a big deal. I mixed it all up and put it in a jar.
Any thoughts?

If it didn't affect this particular tin, that's good news for you, but I don't think it's good QC on their end. The rust may end up eating through the tin and ruining tobacco for someone else if other tins are affected. Might be good to let them know so they can inspect.

Also... Do you think this little bit of rust can break the seal and start to dry the tobacco? I'm still going to smoke it.

It has always happened to me on steel tins that are over 2 years old, especially the moister SG and similar brands. Never happened with McClelland, but those were food grade lined aluminum.
Unless you're interested in resale at some point in the future, my recommendation is to open and jar it in appropriate glass container for long term storage.

Why do they use a code for the date? Why not just put the actual date?

Who knows? The code 19 253 is the 19th day of the 253rd month after December 1995. An actual date would be much easier.

From the photos provided I can't see how this is a Pipesandcigars quality control issue. It looks as if the rust is on the inside lip of the tin, and with the lid on would likely be unnoticeable.

Looks like you're right, Anthony. My brain flipped the bend in the tin and made it look like it was the outside.
I agree, not much P&C can do.

@ anthony and ortho...you are correct. The rust is on the lip/edge of the tin, not the lid. I'm not looking for P&C to exchange it or anything like that after all it's one lousy tin. I'm more concerned with the rust on these square tins in regards to cellaring.
Is this common for the square tins that SG and GH uses?
I see pictures of other members cellars with 50+ of these square tins. Is there a concern or is this just a fluke?

At least they have a system. Look at the Hearth & Home blends as an example of no information whatsoever.

January 2016 is your date code.

I was figuring December 2016. 253 months divided by 12 = 21.08 years. December 1995 + 21 years = December 2016. It would be nice if they just put the regular date on the tins.
Either way...I'm still smoking it.

If it “pffffffffft”-ed when you opened it the seal was fine. If the top came off easily the vacuum had been lost.

I didn't here it "pffffffft" but I had to use a coin to open.
I'm not really worried about it...I'm smoking it.

I agree, especially if they have many tins in their cellar. I already sent them an email.
