They hold up fine. The bottom is more prone to breaking apart or falling out after a treatment compared to the mud on the walls. As long as the pipe mud cures and has become cake like or covered with cake, it will be ok.
On another note furnace cement works well for the bottom of the bowl.

Is this cement toxic? I have a bowl that is just a bit too deep ant leaves more Dottle than I would like. Would this be a candidate to take up this space?
