I've been thinking about collecting Russian carvers lately. Here's my second Russian pipe, this one is made by Andrey Cherepanov. I believe its one of his earlier works since it's marked "GNOM". He and his brother Sergey started sharing the same "Cherepanov" stamp recently(please correct me if I'm wrong). Picture from the seller:

Some of the Russian carvers seem really good. I don't even know of machine pipes from Russia. I'd be dubious

about them if there were any available. I don't associate Russia with quality pipe manufacture. But I'd be glad to

be informed if I'm uninformed on the subject.
That's a handsome briar, good grain brought up with an excellent finish.

There are some amazing carvers from Russia some notable ones are:
Misha Revyagin

Viktor Yashtylov

Vladimir Grechukhin

Alexander Tupitsyn

Sergey Dyomin

Sergey Ailarov

Borris Starkov
It's unfortunate that by the time they make a name for themselves (enough to be know in the states) that the prices of their pipes usually reach the over $500 mark.

So you're the one! I've been eyeballing that pipe for a while. I've been thinking about picking up a Grechukhin, I'm torn between one of his canted rhodesians or one of his stout numbers with an oval shank.

@sergemoat
First bowl finished, and my gut point for now is Grechukhin is excellent, but not to perfection IMHO. I still prefer Boris Starkov. I do believe he will be (has become in some people's eyes including me) THE best maker in the world in the following decades.

Russia does have some great pipe makers. If you are looking for great Russian pipes at great prices check out PS Studio pipes. Everything done by the Russian carvers there is overseen by Vladimir Grechukhin. I have 3 of them and all 3 are excellent.
