Last week, the unthinkable happened, my little buddy died. The tendon of my favorite pipe - a Mr. Brog No. 19 Dublin - snapped off, wedged irretrievably in the mortise. Try as I might, I could not dig out the broken bits...
It was a bit heartbreaking. So here is to you little guy, hope you are smoking up in pipe-heaven!

It cost about $25 in the first place. I thought about drilling it out, but it has stinger in there too.

Clearly it's a favorite pipe. Get it repaired. Likely the repair will last longer than the original. You could spend

a lot more than $25 and not get a pipe you like as well. Easy decision.

Yeah, alright. You guys sold me. Anyway, know a good repair shop in the Washington DC area?

I would mail it to Walker Briar Repair. I have had a couple of tenon repairs done by Mike. Too notch work!

You can get a new one made or have it fixed but to be honest I'm sure you can get a replacement stem by Mr. Brog for cheaper and sooner. Their stems are universal, you can buy a few for cheap.

I knew about the Brog stems, but I will definitely need a repair guy to get the broken tendon and stinger out. If I go to that trouble, I was thinking about just getting a custom vulcanite or cumberland stem made.

Ahh yes. I forgot about the tenon. Well if you want to try to remove it yourself Steve Laug at rebornpipes has a write up on removing broken tenons here. At the very least it can save you repair cost and that way you can just pay to have a stem made. Either way the pipe deserves a new life. Keep us updated if you get a new stem.

I agree that you should get it fixed. Even if the pipe cost $10 originally, it is obviously a great pipe for you and worth the time and money to have it repaired.

Be darned the pipe in the picture does not look like a Dublin to me, more like a straight brandy. A Dublin bowl widens out

toward the top, the brandy narrows, and this one narrows. Anyone else see it that way?

Using a loop screw pictured, I was finally able to get enough leverage with some needle nose pliers to pull the stuck tendon out. Now to get a new stem.
