The guy who had more partners than a dancehall, dead at 91. Had to go with a smile, methinks.
He was a pipesmoker and easily one of the most iconic people of the last 100 years.

On his 85th birthday, he is supposed to have said,
"You are only as old as the girl you feel"

I think Hefner's greatest asset was, a lot of acne faced boys accidentally exposed themselves to some damned good authors while trying to grow hair on their palms. I also imagine many boys, when finally reaching "second base, to their surprise found... girls had hair "down there."
RIP, you did us a solid!

I hate to rain on the parade slightly here. There is no doubt that Hefner was a very significant personality. The world changed hugely between the 1950s and the 60s/70s which followed and Playboy/Hefner played a major role in both encouraging and documenting the revolution. I also endorse the comments about the quality of the articles/interviews he published as well as pay tribute to the high production values he brought to publishing: he was never 'sleazy'.
However, like most things in this world, there are two sides to it. He was for most of his life a 'polygamous bachelor' and there are more than enough testimonies from girls who lived at his mansion who felt pressured into sex as one of the prices they paid for the relative luxury of their surroundings. He boasted of having slept with over a thousand women - compare this to the heart-warming thread we have going on member's wives and partners, many of whom have stuck together for decades.
Hefner was a great businessman but he was responsible for turning porn into an industry. What is the damage caused by turning porn – and therefore the buying and selling of women’s bodies – into a legitimate business?
I really don't want to speak ill of the dead, and there is much about Hefner which is culturally significant. The idea that he was some sort of wonder-man though - that sticks in my craw.
Mike

Hefner quit smoking back in the 1970s, and he also smoked cigarettes. The pipe was more for his image.

Hear, hear, Didache.
Mr Hefner was an exemplification of the kind of man one should strive NOT to be. Hopefully, he died repentant. I don't celebrate his death, but neither shall I celebrate his life. Quite a number of actual good people out there, both extant and departed who smoke(d) pipes.

That he was a hedonist is not arguable. That he accomplished a bit of good is also unarguable. That he, like all of us, had his negatives, is also true. Whether he did more good than bad? That is arguable and depends entirely on one's perspective.
Not arguable is that he was wildly successful in his chosen field. He knew his audience, catered to it, and. should a member be open to it, expanded their horizons with respect to literature, politics, attire, etc. He made a lot of people want to live up to the image he created. Wildly successful or wildly decadent? Perspective is what defines whether he was a "good" or a "bad" guy. But, he was a force no matter one's perspective.
