Should the stem be screwed and unscrewed like a vulcanite to briar pipe, or is it more of a push pull kind of thing?

Nah, not stuck. Just worried that friction from twisting will wear down the tenon.

The same material should never be used for both components in a friction fit design. It inevitably results in galling:

Whoever made the pipe was either unaware of the situation, or decided "it won't be my problem after the pipe is sold". Neither is good.

I work in plastics, and know what same material against itself can do, and is why I posed the question. The pipe is one of Preben Holm's IIS pipes, but have seen the same setup on Pioneer gourd calabash pipes. Think rocking the stem back and forth would be the best option?

Yeah, I'd avoid twisting under pressure as much as possible. Rocking it in with a final firm-but-with-minimal-motion "lock turn" at the end to insert; and a rolling, side-to-side motion to remove should keep galling to a minimum.

Sounds good brother, thanks for the advice. Really like this pipe, and want to keep any wear to a minimum.
