I don't see much conversation about Rad Davis pipes on this forum. Rad is a North American carver from Alabama. He puts out some amazing pipes. Here is a link to his Photo Gallery.

Too big and too pricey for me but are well spoken of in many pipe forums and I have seen several examples of his work and he makes a nice pipe!

Yes he is quite expensive. I remember when he first broke away on his own from Mark Tinsky. His pipes were rather plain and quite reasonable. Here is one I purchased from Rad, I believe it was about 2005 but not sure. I do know it was when he first went out on his own, and I think I paid $60.00 for it.

I wonder how long it took him to sell all those pipes at those prices. Maybe I'm in the wrong line of work

When Rad attends a pipe show his work is scooped up within hours and for good reason. Compare his handmade artisan pipes to some of the high grade Danish or European makers and his work is exceptional, and for prices far below many other makers. IMHO Rad's pipes are a bargain for anyone wishing to own a truly original handmade American pipe which will smoke like a dream at reasonable cost.

Rad's pipe prices reflect their worth at the least. Mine is one of my great ones and there are more in my future.

    Mark Tinsky is the BEST

I disagree, Rads quality and style far exceeds Tinsky. IMO Tinskys pipes all look the same to me, they never change. I have owned a few Tinsky pipes and none were great smokers.

I've got one and have to agree that it is great quality. I rarely smoke it though as it is a much larger than what I generally prefer.

I think what contributes to his excellent reputation is his active participation in the pipe making community as well. I lurk on the pipe makers forum quite a bit, and his posts there are really enlightening. Seems like a nice dude as well.

I have been wanting to get a Rad Davis 55 shape pot for a while now. I see that there are a couple for sale here and there now, which surprises me. Usually they are scooped up quickly.

Tinsky is an OK maker also. I had him build me an author shaped pipe a couple years ago. It's a very good smoker.

Rad is a fantastic maker and a darn nice guy too.

I have two Rad Davis pipes and without a doubt they are among my best smokers. The fact that I can state "without a doubt"says a lot for Rad's pipes. I can not think of any pipe makers in my collection that can provide me with the smoking satisfaction and workmanship as Rad. I would say that Claudo Cavicchi would be my second pipe maker that makes quality pipes, but Claudio is not up to Rad Davis for workmanship, smoking satisfaction and cache.

Bob,I think it's tough to call Rad "better" than Mark, rather apple and orangeish. If Mark only made the number that Rad did, you could bet that they would be stunners.

This is an interesting comparison. I own pipes by both men, and I think they both have outstanding engineering (mortice to tenon fit, drilling, airflow, etc). I think were they differ is that Mark seems to stick to the more traditional English shapes, whereas Rad also branches out towards the more interpretive, "freehand" shapes. I also think Rad is known as an expert in sand blasting to highlight the grain. I think Mark does a fine blast also, but Rad is at the top of the list.
