With such high levels of humectants in hookah tobacco it seems that it really is rather like using an e-cig which vaporizes, but does not burn, similar humectants. The "smoke" coming out of a hookah must be mostly vaporized PG, glycerine, flavoring agents, and relatively small amounts, if any, of actual tobacco smoke.

Hookah tobacco (shisha) is soaked in the stuff. When you buy it and remove some from the package it is a big goopy mess. I enjoy hookah smoking, but am glad I don't have to do any of the work to prep it: cleaning, handling the messy tobacco, working the coals, breakdown, etc.
