I saw this pipe on ebay. The pictures were terrible, but that didn't stop people from bidding, it seems:

I am sure it is a valuable pipe, but was this a case of overbidding?
full listing: Dunhill listing

Yeah, but it looked to be a nice pipe, down in the $400 range. lol
Though I wouldn't have bitten if i had the money, due to the poor pictures.

I think if you take a stem with a white dot, and stick it on a Peterson, the value of the Peterson goes up three times its former value
All kidding aside, I bet that would be a beautiful pipe after being cleaned up though.

I think that the price is high, but it's a bit of movie memorabilia. I can't make out the date stamp or patent and the stamping might have been obliterated by the "George Sidney" stamp, but the pipe is likely 1950 or earlier based on the "Dunhill" over "London" stamp. The "R" stands for Root Briar. It will clean up to look almost like now. Not scorched on the rim.

Dunhill gold is its own world, when I was more active the people who played in that pond would have passed due to the personal inscription. Probably would knock the value down by at least a third. I don't imagine things have changed that much. I have no idea what a baseline value would be, but a few weeks ago an aftermarket gold spigot, non AD, pot with covered up nomenclature brought $800+ which struck me as generous.

And I would have expected that as well. But classic movie buffs will buy the pipe for its association with one of the movies top golden age directors. Imagine if Edward G. Robinson had stamped his pipes and they went up for auction. The "collectability" factors are altered.

I saw a set of six Orson Welles pipes sell for under two grand some years back. Never bid on them as I thought they would go for much more than that. Still kicking myself.

Sable, interesting that these items are offered by someone who also sells Snap On tools, and not a specialist. That may be where they end up. Goes to show that for all its faults, a lot of interesting stuff shows up on eBay.
I hope no one takes offense, if I were going to sell wrenches, there are none finer than Snap On.

About the only reason I buy off of eBay is because I find things that I can't find elsewhere. The guy bought Sidney's pipes at an auction along with a bunch of Snap-On tools other stuff and is selling it off on eBay. Actually, I prefer the amateurs to the pros when it comes to eBay. I know I'm buying off of a flea market and don't need the pretense that I'm shopping at Neiman Marcus.
Still, the prices are people are paying these days are pretty curious, especially when one considers the very real possibility that 5 years down the line you won't be able to give this stuff away.

Sable, I would agree with much of what you said. Collectibles always are among the first things to take it in the shorts when the economy turns around. Still, there are a few nice things that tend to fly under the radar that no one is hyping.
Interesting back story on the pipes, BTW.

I'm a tool guy and noticed those items. The ones that held my eyes were a little miss-matched (metric in an SAE set). So, I passed on those.
