Pot shaped pipes are one of the few shapes that seem to actively offend some pipe buyers. It's the basic simple cylindrical pots with the broad chambers that apparently look too rudimentary to some, despite the fact that these are some of the traditional staples of the extra pricey Dunhill marque. There's a whole second version of the pot that I associate with the Sixten Iverrson design done for Stanwell that lives on in many different pipe brands, where the pot bowl tapers toward the bottom (or flares toward the top) but is too stocky to be a Dublin. This version seems to be well-loved, or at least better loved than the cylindrical version. In defense of both versions, but especially the cylindrical ones, I would point out that many/most of these have a broad chamber that is excellent for complex blends, say four or more different tobaccos. I will agree that the old style pot is not eye candy, but it is a stolid, traditional, sturdy design. I own two, an Amadeus and a Savinelli and, as mentioned, they do a fine job with a good English or Balkan blend, whether PC Chestnut out of a tub or Nat Sherman 536 from a tin. Love 'em or hate 'em, how are you on pots?
