I know this is really early for this, but I would like to see how other PM2012 pipes are coloring. Also if any of the experienced members here can tell me if mine is coloring oddly or not.

This is before I light up....

...and this is after and during a bowl.....

I apologize for the photo size, photobucket is forcing another update on me...gotta find the advanced edit tab....thanks.

The spotting is a little different than I have seen before but all of mine have been different so its probably ok.

You can use the old photobucket (I have Al to thank for this info). There is a tab on the top right.

@foggy- kept clicking that tab like four times, it kept me on the new. I'll try it again in a few hours.

The spotting is unusual, but interesting. Crazy how the color shows darker while smoking.

What is your main tobacco? I wonder if the tobacco has something to do with the colouring?

Been smoking aros, Town Topic, Autumn Evening. Recommended in article for coloring. I think it has something to do with the beeswax. Started coloring as soon as I started applying the wax.
Gonna put it down for a few months after I get 50 smokes in it. Maybe work on the Mermaid Meer...heh heh heh....

If you don't mind, could you post some pics of your PM2012s?

gnat, That is totally weird; and, if I can say so without meaning any offense, not terribly attractive.
Just about every meer I've ever seen has colored from the shank connection forward -- and without white splotches.
I don't own a Storient meer, but here's my own no-name meer with about 1,000 smokes in it.

And here's an oldie known as a Caveman, rusticated, with a chamois sleeve pulled back for the photograph.
This pipe is coloring faster in the rusticated areas, but that doesn't explain why your PM2012 is coloring from the top down.

I wish every Storient pm 2012 or other Storient meer owners can post a photo of their coloring process here..
It is extremely enjoyable to watch the coloring.

    Gnats case is really interesting.
The Whiter spots on the dark areas are ok since those are the grains of the meerschaum block but just dont get the instant color changing before lighting up and after.. color changing not something that can happen in minutes but meerschaum blocks keep surprising us eachtime.Seems like yours turned out to be very senstitively responding to heat like a chameleon

I own an old block meerschaum pipe that has, over many years, eventually colored to a rather deep brown, yet there are still some much lighter rather small light cream-colored "spots" here and there on the stummel. Yet another Meer of mine, this one African meerschaum, also decades old, exhibits dark gray/charcoal spots here and there.

Block meerschaum is a mineral substance, naturally formed under pressure over milennia. I don't expect that, even with the highest quality block, with whatever coaxing, i.e., bee's wax or whatever, the coloring will develop evenly as a matter of course.

I don't know because I smoke about everything in mine. Oils and tars from the tobacco are what stain the meerschaum, though, so whichever leaf tends to release the most of those when smoked.

I don't think it makes a hill of beans difference, actually.

It's a lot more about how often you smoke it.

Oh, and I don't use ANY wax or coating on my Meers. I don't like sealing a pipe -- any pipe -- and after 40+ years, I've found that the natural, unassisted method works best for me.
