I don't know if cabin fever is hitting the membership, or we have a full moon, but we all collectively need to stop any personal attacks. Those kind of posts aren't in the spirit of this forum and they won't be tolerated.

Classified ad prices listed by a member (providing they followed the rules) are not for open discussion. He someone has over-priced an item, the market will sort it out. Pointing it out in a mean-spirited way isn't helpful.

Dishonesty or fraud issues are different and best dealt with a moderator via Private Messages.

We can disagree on a subject - but lets be gentlemen about it and not attack the person because of their point of view. Airing personal disagreements are best done via PM. For open threads on the forum, please lets be civil with one another.

    Thank You, Al.

Then any such deserving responses must have a politically correct disclaimer.

Of course, I get Peck's humorous poke at cigarmaster (Harris). But, that is a good example of a delicate situation - not everyone is privy to the details between members who rib each other in public. That could incite a response from someone not in the club who takes it on face value and create unnecessary issues - so, please tread carefully here. Light-hearted fun, is of course part of the appeal on any forum, we don't want to lose that spontaneity.

I have seen threads that get "out of hand" lets say, and the more mature members will post correcting comments. This is important too. I generally refrain from posting much in a controversial subject. It usually works itself out. Thank you ssjones for your help here.

I am thankful for the atmosphere here. I enjoy the tongue in cheek comments. Its usually pretty obvious which ones they are. With that in mind I vote for peckinpahhombre to be tarred and feathered for his actions.

It's always perturbing when a Slytherin attacks a Hufflepuff. Luckily a Gryffindor is usually nearby. And let's all hope for a sane system created by a Ravenclaw.

Social media in general allows for an instantaneous response that often goes unfiltered by the sender. In the pre-computer-as-had-by-everyone era, not so long ago, one had to actually talk to someone else and these comments were dealt with immediately and PERSONALLY. Now, not so much. My wife and I were at a very upscale restaurant in our area and watched in horror as a couple sat at a table ignoring their expensive dinner and each other while on their smart phones; a relationship doomed to failure. At the other end, when I first had access to email I would frequently respond to someone's comments with the kind of vitriol that got me in trouble. Now I rarely respond to inflammatory email until a day (and night's sleep) has passed. Just think what your mother might have said if she had read some of your postings...

As a long time lurker and recent member, I think most folks who read this or any other forum for a while can discern the difference between good natured S#!t talking and genuine insults and anger.

I intend to be the soul of sweet reason on all occasions, but at least I try not to use an online pipe discussion group to vent all the frustrations and rage of a lifetime. People do need to go to the gym, play handball, run, hunt, or debate or whatever, to exorcise their angers. It works better when you actually do something with this unhappiness, provided it's not destructive.

Albert Einstein was once quoted as saying, “I believe that pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs.” One of the reasons behind this statement is that pipe smoking is meant to be a slow leisurely activity. It takes patience to smoke a pipe. Unlike cigarettes and cigars, there is a certain amount of technique to smoking a pipe. Where cigars and cigarettes can just be picked up, lit and puffed on, pipes require the development of a technique in order to get the best smoking experience.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. A few of us promptly threw him back in the bed and gave him a blanket party. There was some laughing, some crying and then Gunny Al showed up and broke it up. Just another Saturday night.

Sometimes people need to be reminded of their stupidity, so calling them a douche bag isn't a personal attack; its just a friendly reminder they're being stupid again. Just trying to get them to see the error of their ways and for them to straighten up.

Gentlemanly and ladylike behavior is important at all times.

It should be permissible to criticize actions; calling people angry names and casting aspersions on their character seems beyond the pale to me.

Some people just don't "get" subtle nuances of the language that differentiates criticizing someone's ideas from criticizing them personally. I have no idea what the incident was that sparked this thread, but my guess is that it involved a knuckle dragger that communicated better with "foul" choices of words over ideas. Some people get confused beyond a simple yes or no answer or explanations that go beyond four words at a time.

And yes, these folks tend to get the Darwin treatment, as far as the forum gene pool goes anyways.

If you take things in a hobby forum so seriously that something can hurt your feelings... Or, if this post was too long for you to comprehend... then there is this place where all the "good" dogs go when they leave here, called Facebook... they have pastures, animals to chase, "like" buttons, and "ignore" buttons for those who just need technological help in moderating their minds, moods, and inclinations. You can even set the security level to "family" and then you can have them exclude all of the hurtful content for you.

    Now, carry on.

Yes indeed. No offense taken. Actually I just lost my virginity and what do you know, in a few months you're gonna big a big brother!

    Well played Sir....well played!!

Oh, and I agree with the original post!

@Cosmic, are you impugning my ancestors?

my guess is that it involved a knuckle dragger

    They were "gapped-toothed...slack-jawed...mouth-breathing...drooling...knuckle-dragging...slope-headed...inbred Carpathian Hillbillies"

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
Specialization is for insects!" - Robert Heinlein

@tennsmoker: just substitute the name of the mountain range.
Mine immigrated to the Pocono Mountains, so they remained Hillbillies.
I continue the tradition as a Colorado Rocky Mountain Hillbilly.
Though none of my kinfolk meet the criteria of "tattoo-to-tooth ratio of greater than 1", however many may have qualified if they had even 1 tattoo.

Cossack. Some of mine have only one tooth!

Others live so far up the mountain, they think I'm a foreigner, or revenuer, when I visit, which isn't often.

OT! Way OT! Though it was said the first mate smoked a pipe.

Needed to test Imgur embedding, and this is as bad as any thread to do so. This from Santa Barbara a few days ago. Don't anchor boat in crappy roadstead!

If this thread remains open it's fine to delete this- or fine to delete if closing.

I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

So if I understand this correctly, terms of address like douche or scumbag are to be avoided. This is seriously going to reduce my usable online vocabulary.

Those are OK, but only when used a term of endearment.

I forgot to ask if shithead is OK. My mother used to call me that a lot, and she told me that it was a term of endearment though I didn't recognize it to be so at the time.

@jpmcwjr I think that picture is entirely appropriate as it illustrates how I arrived to this forum.

I am guilty of taking a friendly jibe the wrong way. It certainly takes me time to acclimate to new environments and new personalities. After the "Academics" debacle of 2015, I feel sufficiently girded to the onslaughts of my fellow pipers. In the future, please remember to call me "Mr." shithead or "Mr." douchebag to avoid any politeness confusion on my part. Thank You.

peck, I hate your guts and you are a total douchebag. I am on my way to burn your barn down with all your tobacco in it, and there is nothing you can do to stop me.

Seems a bit counter intuitive...for you Mo-rons, it means dumb, stupid, no common sense.

But then again, who am I to judge?

Folks: Thanks for listening. This was probably preaching to the choir, but it looks like the emphasis was understood.
