I was wondering what folks choose to drink DURING a smoke. For any reasons... perhaps to revitalize the inside of your mouth; so your next draw is like your first, to ease a bit a tongue bite etc...

Hey pipevilleworld, it usually goes like this when smoking.

    Coffee in the morning.
Soda, water or tea in the afternoon.
Beer or something stronger at night.

Usually coffee in the morning and thereafter tea or water.

I mirror this almost exactly, for me it looks more like:
Coffee until I've had 4 cups.
    Water or soda until 6.
Beer or a nice bourbon/ scotch until bed.

No!.. no OJ for me... I'm allergic to orange juice.
But, dependent on the tobacco being offered up I will consume the following:

Coffee/Black or Türk kahvesi (Turkish coffee)
Hot tea, Earl Grey (on occasion)
Brandy w/a glass of ice water
    Martini
    Beer (various types usually cheap)
    Buffalo Rock Ginger Ale (daily)
    Diet Pepsi
    Ice water

Coffee or tea in the morning for me, but from noon on, whatever happens to grab my fancy at the moment...often beer, scotch, or rye, but on occasion I'll reach for pop or juice.

Soda can be rough on you though if you're still pretty new and getting tongue bite often. If that's the case I'd suggest just ice water/tea/coffee/a glass of scotch or bailey's etc.

That's a big NO from me when it comes to OJ or lemonade while smoking. Something about the citrus totally throws off my palate.

Cola (regular and diet) and root beer both have a thick sugary taste which, in my opinion, compliments latakia blends.

Coffee tastes good with any/all blends. So does beer, the darker the better.

I don't drink much liquor, but a friend once poured me "good scotch" to drink with my pipe, and it was quite nice.

I have found, personally that the OJ nuetralizes my mouth... and my next few draws taste as bright as the first. I have had a couple smokes, with a buddy of mine who smokes cigars, and accompanied them with a little Johnie Walker scotch whiskey; it was perfect!

depends on the time of day like others. I do like a good cup of coffee with a pipe. Iced tea or iced water seems to be the most common for me. In the evenings I can commonly be found with a single malt whisky and iced water on the side. Cold beer always works well with a pipe too.

With my Briar Fox right now, I am enjoying a cadillac margarita: 4 oz. Corazon Anejo Tequila, 2 oz. Grand Marnier, 1 juiced lime, and a large pinch of rock sea salt.

    1. A good Scotch. I like The Dalmore. 12 is good. 15 is divine.

    2. Benedictine and Brandy liquer. I just butchered that spelling.

    3. Coca Cola Classic. Tastes great on the back of the tongue while enjoying a good English. Just try it!

Coffee first and then in no particular order a good Single Malt, Red Wine, Beer, or water.

As an example to others, and not that I care for moderation myself, it has always been my rule never to smoke when asleep, and never to refrain from smoking when awake.

Depends on the mood and on the tobacco i am smoking. Usually i drink Turkish coffee in the morning while smoking some english mix. Then depends on the tobacco and the hour of the day. For example a find smoking samuel gawith 1792 flake along with some strong ale or scotch the best possible combination at late night.

Coffee for the morning. Water throughout the day. My fiance has told me repeatedly that I Have two nighttime smoking personas.
    1. The "Distinguished Southern Gentleman" where I grab the briar and some single malt scotch.
    2. "My Hillbilly Grandad" where I grab the cobs and a cold PBR or Southpaw.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Port. I like a good tawny with my pipe. Some English walnuts and you've got near heaven. No stilton cheese while smoking though, yuck :p
Pim's & 7up is also good; I haven't noticed the negative citrus reaction mentioned, but I don't add lemon/lime/orange slices to my Pim's.
I also enjoy a sweet red wine as well as whiskey/whisky with a pipe, both good bourbons and scotch.

    Sweet Tea mostly for me.

    I agree with torcoman

Depends on the mood and on the tobacco i am smoking.

These are my tastes preferences but I don't always have a beverage when smoking a pipe:
Virginias (golden or light) can't handle much more than ice water.
    Burleys are good with coffee.
Latakia blends work well with many beers and spirits.

Coffee more often than not. Diet Ginger Ale comes in second. When I drink alcoholic beverages, it would be an Old Fashioned or a Vesper with a couple of stuffed olives to replace the twist.

I admit to drinking almost anything with a pipe, but not with any great intention. For me, coffee isn't
optimal, though I drink it with a pipe often. Coffee is a flavor experience and a mild upper, and it gets
in the way of a pipe for me. Most tea, hot or cold, goes really well. No herbal or sweet stuff. P&W Tips
or any green or black tea usually sets off even a sophisticated blend pretty well, English or aro. Plain
water goes well. Scotch is too edgy for me; I like it by itself, but not with tobacco. Bourbon can make
a good match, but more with aros, not so much with English -- there's enough going on with a good
English or Balkan. Colas, no; diet colas, never. Soft drinks, nyet. If I get to enjoying the pipe, I sometimes
abandon the beverage, except to clear my palate. Beer and ale type beverages coat my mouth and make
me feel overfull and don't complement a pipe at all, though I know I'm in the minority here, big time.

Coffee in the morning for sure. Goes very well with a pipe.

I don't drink much alcohol these days, so I like cranberry w/ seltzer. For me, the sugar/sweetness counteracts the nicotine quite nicely.

There was a tea I dearly loved, then the stores stopped carrying it. Had a very earthy and smoky flavor that was perfect with a pipe. Lapsang something. Wish I could find it.

    Alcoholic or Non?

    Non-alcoholic beverages exist?

In all seriousness, when not hitting scotch, bourbon, vodka, coffee liquor, red wine, sparkling wine, stouts, or porters, I've been known to smoke with coffee, coke, or tea.

Yes to OJ, been my favorite liquid as long as I can remember. Not sure that it works well with smoking though, but I normally finish a whole glass in a drink or two.

Right before I light up my evening pipe, I head out to the barn with a big old tankard and fill 'er up with fresh milk from my best Holstein, Old Bessie. Nothing like a fresh, warm glass of milk straight off the teat to sip as I smoke.

I would have to say coffee cause its the only thing I feel that enhances the pipe experience. I love my scotch and whiskeys but I feel that pipe smoking and whiskey are both tasting experiences better enjoyed on there own or else they would conflict with each other too much.

But never again anything of the diet pop nature the aspertan really enhanced tounge bite for me and it is the worst feeling ever.

Heya Pete. I think you're thinking of Lapsang Souchong. It's a fully oxidized Chinese tea which is traditionally dried over a wood fire. This gives the tea leaves a smokey character. Sorry your local tea shop doesn't carry it, it is a lovely tea... I bet you could order it online.

I, like many others, like to smoke with coffee (black) in the morning, something sweet during the day and evening, and then with my adult beverage of choice in the evening. My sweet drink of choice tends to be a sweet soda like root beer, and my adult beverage is either a single malt Scotch or a hoppy IPA, or a Guinness, or a nice red, or a... well you get the idea.

Coffee in the am. Water or gatorade through the day. And either brandy, cognac, or whiskey in the late afternoon and before bed.

Depends what i'm doing during the day. If its a nice sunday I'd stick to some form of black tea for pretty much the whole day.

If its a work day (i'm a student so by work, I mean right essay's and read) I'll drink scotch. Doesn't really matter what type of scotch. I tend to enjoy blended, single malt 12 years, 14 years, 18 years. Just scotch, sometimes ice, always water. I always stop drinking several hours before going to bed also. Though I maintain the puffing.

I prefer sweet tea. I try not to drink alcohol much anymore, but I thoroughly enjoy the taste of beer, so I usually keep some O'douls around. I do still have a beer or mixed drink from time to time though. I also like cream soda while smoking. Right now I'm drinking Pepsi, which is not a real good match with the Blue Mountain I'm smoking, oh well!

Depending on which pipe I choose, I'll drink a little tobacco juice when I smoke.

In all seriousness- red wine with a Latakia-laden English blend. Coffee, whiskey, rum, or water with Virginias.

Coffee and tea are great. Beers can be ok, but I find that whisky pairs better with pipes/cigars as far as alcohol goes. To me, Scotch tends to overpower the more one-dimensional flavor of cigar, so I prefer a bourbon with those, but any good whisky works with a pipe (probably because I smoke latakia blends almost exclusively). Also, a dark rum with VA blends is a surprisingly good match. This fall, I plan on trying a nice fresh cider with a pipe.

Coffee in the morning. As noted it goes with any tobacco. In the evenings I like to drink black teas with my smoke. My favorite is Twinnings Irish Breakfast. Other nights when I enjoy a beer or wine I do not like to mix drinking alcohol with the pipe although I always enjoy a bowl afterwords later in the evening.

+1 to the Irish Breakfast, pairs well with any tobacco I've tried so far. It's also just a really delicious strong tea.

What I have found to be the best non-alcoholic drink for me while smoking is fresh brewed Luzianne Iced Tea with a bit of lemon and sugar.

    irish breakfast tea
    laphroaig 10 year
beer, but generally only stronger ales, a belgium tripel goes down a treat.
coffee, turkish coffee is a good one
    red wine occassionally.
    brandy when i have it...

I dont tend to match a particular tobacco with any one drink, more just a constitutional decision of the moment.

I don't really care if the cup is half full or half empty, I just want something to sip on.

I can only sometimes drink pop (or as some call it, soda) when smoking. It hurts my mouth, especially when I am smoking something that is prone to giving me tongue bite. Coffee, wine, and beer all work well for me. Even though beer is "bubbly" like pop, it is less so and doesn't hurt my tongue as much. If I plan on smoking more than one tobacco, I drink water to help cleanse my mouth.

It's a cultural trait that Americans and Westerners in general (of which I am one native born and life long) want
too much all at once. We want the music, the atmosphere, the cocktail, the intricate pipe blend, zee beautiful
ladies, the tropical breezes, etc. Where one or two stimuli might really work best. A really terrific bourbon can
stand all on it's own. As can a superb blend tobacco. Etc. It's tempting to layer on everything, but sequential
is probably the best, when you have the best. And please don't add a cell phone or a video game to anything!
Okay, that last was pure prejudice.

When I first started the pipe, I got tongue bit so badly that after reading that acidic drinks acerbates the bite of certain tobaccos. Now, that I am enjoying many different types of tobacco, with a proper technique, I will have an occasional soda. But, I don't have any regime of what I drink. I tend to drink more coffee during the day, but sometimes, I will grab an OJ or peach juice. However, I have found that a pulpy apricot juice with Gawith's Dark Flake is awesome.

I'm a bit of a teetotaler by choice. The pipe sets my head just fine without anything else.

I'm good either way. Sometimes a beer or hard cider goes great with a pipe, and sometimes it's tea or lemonade. I think however my favorite beverage during a smoke is a good hot cup of coffee

Beer for the most part. Coors light, specifically.
