Just a last minute check. I think the last time I posted, my itinerary was different. It's Rome for a week, and then the South of France between Nice and Cannes and Monaco. I have plans to visit Musico in Rome. Is anyone aware of anone else in the vicinity of these areas? I wanted to go to Bologna and Genoa, but that's not happening now.

I assume I won't be bringing any tobacco back since customs in Canada and the USA are getting tougher (I am going through Canada).

Any chance you can take a detour and visit St Claude, the world's pipe capital?
Dunno about US customs, but I recently came back from Europe with ~250 grams of pipe tobacco, and ~61 cigars. Nobody blinked and I got charged nothing, even though I was (a bit) above the limit. I was up front and declared them, though: they just waved me by.

Don’t forget, you can always mail the tobacco back home, instead of going through customs, I would stick relatively small parcels though.

Parma and Milan... Seems there are an abundance of pipe makers to the North... There not as many around Rome.
No major detours. It's a vacation with my lady, not a pipe vacation. Musico is a big one for me though. I thought Bertram Safferling was in Rome, but I can't find any evidence to back it up.

lasttango : caution! in France you will not find many pipe tobaccos (in the best case some Dunhill, Peterson, some Samuel Gawith plus many pouch aromatics) and the ones you can get are super expensive. For instance, a Dunhill 50g tin is sold 23 euros (US$27).

When I was in Rome a few years ago I went to these two shops:
http://www.fincatolacasadelhabano.com/
https://www.novelli.it/
Bought a beautiful Savinelli Pianoforte at Fincato and a Savinelli Roma (of course!) at Novelli. I was looking for a Sistina but neither shop had them. Fincato also sell their own house pipes as well. I found the prices to be very reasonable--here is the link to their pipes: http://www.fincatolacasadelhabano.com/linea_fincato/pipe/1.html. Fincato had a much larger range of tobacco than Novelli. If you like cigars, grab a few packs of Toscano cigars (I really liked the Garibaldi); you can find Toscanos at any news stand throughout the country. If you are flying into Canada, then make sure you bring in 200g or less per person. The US is much more lax about tobacco, to the point where I called up customs and asked them what the limit was for loose pipe tobacco--they couldn't tell me. Enjoy your trip!

Also, Fincato was a super cool shop to visit--lots of tobacciana items and old pipes, and a huge walk-in humidor for cigars. I didn't take any pics but here are some from their website:
