I wonder why smoking a pipe makes coffee taste so much richer and good? Cigarettes or cigars don't have the same effect in my opinion.

I think it's alchemy. But whatever it is I wholeheartedly agree. There is something magical about a cup of coffee and a nice bowl in the morning. I can't wait until it warms up a bit so I can get back to my morning ritual on the back deck.

I always try to drink something while enjoying a pipe, whether coffee or water. There is definitely a 'more than the sum of its parts' situation.

I beg to differ on cigars not going well with coffee. Give me a strong dark roasted coffee late at night with a strong madura or dark fired stick on a warm night anytime. Or, a light breakfast blend of coffee with a Connecticut.
I like it with pipes also... that's just a given.

Why they go together? Like tobacco, coffee comes in earthy, citrusy, hints of spice, fruity even... lots of flavors that compliment the flavors of different tobaccos.

My other beverage options are usually fruit juices, water, or Mountain Dew.

Mountain Dew is Heaven with a pipe when rum is not an option.

Yep, I like Mountain Dew and homemade limeade with a pipe. As far as alcohol goes I like scotch with a pipe. I usually smoke something little stronger than my daytime OTC with scotch. A strong burley blent like Old Joe Krantz or a balkan like Plum Pudding goes really with a little Johnny Walker or if I'm splurging some Dunhill Nightcap and Glenlivet. I also occasionally smoke a good cigar with scotch. CAO Brazilias are good. I used to love Rocky Patel Edge but the quality of those started to drop. I rarely smoke cigars now because it got to be such a crapshoot as to whether your cigar would be smokable. Many times i have paid ten dollars and up for a premium cigar and the damn thing wouldn't draw or I had to deal with runners. Pipe tobacco is more reliable in my opinion and more economical. But I do like a good cigar sometimes. Maybe I'll try one with a good cup of coffee. Thinking about it now, I never did smoke a cigar with coffee.

I don't drink alcohol, so it's always coffee or Mt Dew for me as well!

I agree. Coffee and pipe tobacco (or cigar) compliment each other well. Lately I've been drinking tea and learning the various tea blends. That also goes great with a pipe, sometimes even better than coffee.

I used to love a good Virginia in the morning with coffee, but currently I'm really loving Prince Albert, Granger or Carter Hall.

In the evening I whiskey in many different forms and I smoke tobacco in many different forms.

During the day, it's water or Red Bull and Codger blend.

Coffee for me, when they thru me out of GA, they took away my Southern card and now I can't even buy Mtn. Dew. Scotch, it is an acquired taste. I have never acquired it. Now give me a good red or port and I'm all over that with an English blend savored real slow.

It works both ways. The pipe makes the coffee better, and the coffee brings out the flavors of the tobacco. I love a pipe and coffee. I also enjoy a pipe with hot tea, or rum.

Unfortunately Can't do without my after dinner whiskeys(scotch, preferably single malts) and pipe / or Cigar.
Btw,now as I'm thinking on pairing a cup of coffee or tea with a pipe can't stop wondering am I supposed to drink this beverage tidy or cold since it won't keep warm during the whole half an hour bowlful

I used to have Dunhill's Early morning pipe whilst I drank my fresh coffee! I should get some more of that one day and go back to it!

So, you pipe only in the morning, or are able to drink coffee into the evening? I am jealous.

Being a coffee whore, I start on it hot, enjoy it through the lukewarm phase and happily proceed to finish the last cold cup, as well.

The trick for me is using a press, where the hot water is added and that's it. No sitting on a burner until it transforms into battery acid.

By burner, I refer to the hot plate on a typical drip coffee machine, not like the one Anthony shows. I believe those operate at a lower temperature.

I was going to post in "What Are You Smoking..." just now, but since I'm drinking coffee.......

I'm currently enjoying a cup of coffee & chicory with a Peterson XL21 filled with The Country Squire's Middle Earth Blend, Rivendell. They pair very well together.

I'm glad you said this, as it means I'm not the only one to throw a disagreement into the mix. I had a cup of coffee immediately following a pipe yesterday evening and I didn't like the way it made my coffee taste. It only took a few sips for the familiar taste of my coffee to return and drown out the tobacco, but no, I'll keep the two separate from now on.

Coffee is great with the pipe, but so are the many variations of black tea. I love and english breakfast, an earl gray or a Darjeeling along with a bowl.

I always start my day with two bowls and 2 large cups of strong black coffee (when I’m off work). Couldn’t imagine life without one or the other. I definitely believe they compliment each other.

Sweetened coffee is fine, even great when all the other added flavors or sugar doesn't drown out the actual taste of coffee. Otherwise what's the point? Granted, this is simply my own opinion, so drink it like you like it. Personally, I've found that the right amount of flavored creamer ( International Delight's Hazelnut Creamer for example) will actually enhance the flavors of the coffee.

Edit to add: Since we're on the topic of pipes and coffee, has anyone here tried any of the coffee blends from Cup O Joes?

If I drink coffee it’s usually a latte or flat white. In NZ, breakfast and after dinner is usually black tea with a dash of milk. That’s seems to go well with the pipe for me. I can’t seem to drink alcoholic drinks while piping. They hide the tobacco flavour.

More than you want to know about me, coffee, and a tobacco pipe: I do a small pot of coffee, stove-top percolator, in the morning hours before I usually light up a pipe, so there's that. I put a small amount of milk in coffee, to cut the acid a little, by my lights, and milk coats my mouth and reduces pipe flavors anyway, to me. Coffee is a big complex bouquet of flavors, as is nearly all pipe tobacco, even single leaf, so I find the combination cancels too much out on both taste experiences. This is all just me. No advice here for anyone else. Love my coffee. Love my 'baccy. Other drinks complement a pipe well for me.

Pembroke in a large billiard with some Cafe Robusto. Yum!

I drink a blond roast in the mornings and save the dark roast for the evenings. I divvy them up that way when I learned that dark roast coffees have a LOT less caffeine than a blond roast, and this explained why after three cups of blond, I could thread a sewing machine while it was on. But, dark roast coffees I could drink all day long.

Strong black coffee and a pipe is how I start every day. One of the advantages of working 2nd shift, plenty of time to relax before work.

French press coffee and a pipe outdoors... great slow Weekend morning. Shameless plug for a local coffee roaster, amazing coffee... Roastery of Cave Creek. ROC. Look them up.

I don’t work there and not affiliated in anyway, just like them and their coffee.

Smoking a pipe without coffee would be like eating apple pie without ice cream.

I also enjoy an occasional brandy with my pipe too.

I’m new to this but every morning for the past week (+) I’ve had a bowl while drinking my “bullet Proof” coffee on my back deck. Been a good way to start my day.

I like making stovetop espresso during the weekends and enjoy a pipe or a cigar, depending on the weather. I like “La Llave” when I’m smoking.

    Dunhill will return.

I quit coffee years ago and became a tea-drinker; however, only when I smoke either 5 BROTHERS or BLACK FRIGATE the craving for a large "Jumbo Java" to have with these two tabaks is so strong, that I often end-up running out to get one at the 24-hour convenience store - even if it's 4am. - Sherm Natman

I’m a caffeine lover. Decaf is only for when you can’t get anything else!

Generally, you’ll see me with one of three things in my hand. A pipe, a pen or a coffee cup!
