At the upcoming Chicago pipe show this May 2014, author Rick Newcombe will b e giving a presentation on pipe smoking in the movies. I think it will be quite interesting and I can't wait to see it.
In the meantime, here is an enlightening, fun, quick read as an introduction and teaser to the future presentation.

I hope he includes something from the French Maigret series starring Bruno Cremer. He has to be the all-time champ of film pipesmokers.

Never really noticed pipe smoking in films till I started smoking. Last night I watched "The Double" with Richard Gere (not a great movie but ok). There was a brief shot in which a distinguished looking gentleman was smoking a pipe at a street cafe in the background. I'm sure I would have never noticed it before.
BTW, the scene posted above with Robert Young is indeed a great pipe scene.

misterlowercase -- that's prominent as hell! Pipe is upstaging the actors.
You just don't see guys walking around like that anymore.
Let's see what we can do to change that.
:)
