Hope this is ok to post. I have a question. I've been a member here for a little over 2 years and have recently joined another forum - Pipe Smokers Forum (PSF). All was going great until about 3 weeks ago - I can not longer log on to the PSF site. My account has not been deleted, but when I try to log in, it eventually fails giving me a "500 Server Error"

I've tried contacting them but to no help. Even have another member of the site trying to help, but to... no reply yet.

My question, is anyone here a member there, and have you too encountered this same problem.

Forums are tightening security and limiting whole ranges of IP addresses to combat spam.

If this does not clear up soon just e-mail the site admin and let them know.

In the meantime ... proxy server is your friend.

Cobguy - I've emailed the webmaster - no reply. Tried setting up a new "temporary acct" just so I could log in and get help for my other acct, but the new accts fails to get completely established.

    Proxy Server??? Do tell more.

    Are you a member there??

I tried joining that one before I joined here. I didn't want to be forced to be affiliated with a magazine/company but there is no join option for me.. absolutlely no way of joining.

And although this site is the most complicated forum I frequent, it is great and full of neat info. And I'm glad I decided to make an account! Would be nice to check out the other one though..

This site does need the standard 'subscribed' threads option, it was a real pain figuring out how to find them!

    No. Masons smoke cigars.

I'm not sure they don't want me... they just are not making any efforts to help. Like myself, Bonehed is also a member of both this forum and PSF. He has offered to help by contacting the moderators at Pipe Smokers Forum - but he's not getting any help from them either. He is however able to log in, which is a step up from me.

As I have mentioned in other threads regarding that "other" place, don't bother. This place blows the doors off it anyway. If they can't get their act together then so be it. I received that 500 server error when I visted there a year ago. Funny how I have never seen it anywhere else.

I've seen a 500 error at several forums. I don't know what it means. Sometimes, I've gone back and could read the page. Other times, not. I've never had that problem with PSF, though.

This is the best pipe site. The pipesmokersforum is boring and more censorious.

So far, it seems a more relaxed and focused community. Less try-harding.

I abandoned that forum several years ago. I'm happy where I am. I do remember the site hacked pretty good a while back and required everyone to re-up. I never bothered.

Interesting, Mike S. it's odd that there is no way to contact the site moderators unless signed in. And there is no contact us on the site. It was fun while it lasted.

Smokersforum was the one that got hacked not to be confused with pipesmokersforum.

Pipesmokersforum in a good forum. A lot of good people on there. Good luck trying to join.

Looks like a purge of non-conformists. The "technical difficulties" explanation increasingly appears to be a shield.

    Just baffles me.

Forums are difficult. You want freedom of expression, but some people will use it to destroy forums. There is no such thing as a "(total) free speech" forum.

However, other people view forums as an extension of their identities, and when this personality type runs a forum, they do more than remove threats to expression -- they eliminate dissent.

Those are good forums to avoid. It kills them through slow entropy eventually because discussion limits itself, and those limits then expand as people try to toe the line, and over time it becomes an echo chamber.

I've seen a 500 error at several forums. I don't know what it means.

500 is pretty much the web's generic, catch-all error. Basically a script failed to execute or wasn't allowed to.

I actually had the same issue for this forum a while ago, and it also prevented me from downloading the radio show. Kevin was most helpful sorting it out quickly for me as soon as I emailed him. My IP address just got caught up in a regular purge of spam cleaning, or something. I guess these things happen - it's nothing personal.

When "things happen," admins reply to email (sent to three different known contacts).

This is someone hiding behind the excuse of "technical difficulties" to conduct some kind of purge.

They're not honest enough to admit it, which usually means they are embarrassed to admit why.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread. Maybe we'll get some good "necro" memes.

I'm getting the same errors trying to log onto pipesmokersforum. Are they technical, or Stalinistic purges? I'm off work for carpal tunnel surgery (typing one handed) and registering on a bunch of forums, piping and otherwise.

The latter. If you do not obey the dogma, you are removed.

It is a forum best avoided.

Sounds like they're killing their own user base, ad revenue and visibility. I'm surprised they're still around from two years ago. Won't bother with them. Mostly, I can behave without their authoritarianism.

Smart upgrade. Having the most current threads visible as the splash page is the way to do it.
