    Jonesing,

Since we have the group but can't post pictures there, do we want to put them here?

We could copy/paste URL's into the group. I think that could work.

    Ok guys,
    I tried it.
I used Photobucket, uploaded the picture, then copied the direct link and pasted it in the group message.
A direct (clickable) link appeared and it worked.
    Try it.
    You'll like it.

    Lawrence,

I didn't have any luck posting the link in the "Group"... so for now, I'll put them here...

Frank's second... The first one failed...

My project today, I'm waiting on stems... 2" Chamber, 1.25" bowl diameter, about 3" tall... Maybe I'll use my straight nose warmer stem on it.

This is the second one for the day... Not quite done...

I used the base of a Mule Deer Antler on the shank... NO ANIMALS WERE HURT IN THE MAKING OF THIS PIPE... The antler was as shed from this spring...

This one will go to the guy that made the pipe rack for me... It's smokeable, but we doesn't smoke... It will look good on a plaque in his shop..

Phil... Nice work and I really like the last one with the contribution from the mule deer.

    Phil:

Did you shape and drill that horn? Holy shit did you secretly go off to study pipe making instead of to WY? Nicely done sir!

By the way I was gonna post this separate but I'll just do it while I'm here.

Here's how not to use a band saw by Luigi Viprati. Helluva pipe maker.

I wish I went off to pipe making school...

Actually I have a lot of down time... Between checks and whatever might come up... So internet it is... I just look for different shapes and "accessories" that others put on their pipes... It's not like I'm really screwing off, my boss makes his fly rods when he gets stressed, he has his bench setup in his office...

The antler is pretty easy to work with... HOWEVER, if it's too small of a piece, they tend to break if the shank is too large... Still learning...

I think I need a band saw... But that would take half the fun out of pipe making...

I call this one "Deer Slayer" (again, no animals were injured in the making of this pipe)... This one will go to the guy that gave me the antlers... Considering the going rate in about $13.00+ a pound at auction...

It still needs some finish work on the top and bottom...

This second picture is an up close of the antler base... He was starting to get a nice brow tine going... I just had to incorporate that into the pipe...

It is totally functional; However, he (the guy that's getting it), too does not smoke... Good mantel piece...

    My evening project...

It's about 4.5" long with a MM Royal Amber Bit, the chamber is 1.25" deep, 3/4" round w/ a 5/32" air hole... Very "CUTE"... Not so much a "warmer", just a short light weight pipe as my boss asked for. He's an avid fisherman (from Alaska) and used to smoke a pipe...

He told me that he would smoke a pipe if I made him one rather than the POS Swisser Sweets that he chokes us with when he's around... I'm gunna even give him some tobacco...

    Thanks for the compliments...

OK, just for Lawrence, less than 4", 3/4"x 1.5" Chamber... I did apply a thin coat of paraffin wax to it, hopefully to curb any cracking... It's what he wanted...

wow, a nice looking Benchmade knife and cool looking pipe!

being a young guy, I can say, so many people my age have underestimated the handiness of a well made pocket knife and the enjoyment of a handcrafted pipe.

(Im more of a SpyderCo guy though...)

    I cheated a bit Jay.

I think this is the same knife Phil showed in another photo and I have one just like it. Don't recall if it's the chive or scallion. I have one of each. I think the chive is the smallest one.

And I should say, I am not a "knife guy". The 2 Kershaw's are the only decent knives I have and for me they just make a nice pocket knife I can open one handed. I wouldn't know a Benchmade from a bench press.

ya phil nice work i was wondering

What kind of tools do you use besides the carving knife. IM waiting for my vice and work bench to come into the mail so i can finally carve my pipe. Any tips? Patience? When you carve follow the direction of the rings?

saving up some money and planning to get this:

I know nothing about that saw, other than they can be expensive...

All I have is a $60.00 drill press, hand saw, hack saw, series of drill bits (Brad bits are good)... A 3/4" & 1/2" Forestner bit's, hand drill, vise, pocket knife & and diffrent sand paper grits form 50-220 along with 0-0000 steel wool ...

I know nothing about carving pipes, I'm still in the 2 piece type... Mine are all Freehand, meaning nothing is measured and is drilled by hand...

All I can say is use your imagination and have fun...

Nope, it was a $20.00 basket pipe I picked up in Iowa City... I'm guessing that you like it? If you want the other half, you can have it... It's in a bucket of mics. pipe stuff...

I liked the bit too... just a little to rich for my blood if I was going to use them on my "homemade" pipes... MM seems to be sending me some good stems when I order from them... I've been ordering the "Freehand Fancy"... This last time I ordered a few other styles...

PIMO seems to have some good stems too... They are a few more pennies than MM, but I think some of them might even be the same as the MM "Freehand" stems... They can also be drilled to 5/32"... SLOWLY...

    Hey Shoto,

I have one of those Japanese Pull Saws.
Yes; they are very easy to use and do have a thinner cut.
But, you have to be careful not to push with any real force, because they will flex very easily if there is any resistance.

I hadn't considered using mine on briar, or iron wood because it is very dense.
But, mine works fine on other types of wood, e.g. Ebony, Pine, and Oak.
You have to be careful with Ebony.... it is hard as nails and will split or scorch easily. It makes for good tampers with some break in period, but won't stand up to high heat for any length of time. It also come coated in bees wax to keep it from splitting. (Don't ask me why bees wax. I don't have a clue.)
Like I said it's a very flexible tool and (as long as it's sharp) cuts most types of wood with relative ease.
One just has to be patient because you can't put a ton of pressure on it.

OK, here are three more pipes that I made today... The first one is a full size Apple Wood with an inlay of antler at the base of the shank at the bowl... Also pictured is two antler pipe tampers with picks...

Second is the Mini-Shot Series... Both pipes are REAL and you can smoke them... They are made from more seasoned Apple Wood, hence the difference in color between the large pipe and the small pipes...

The Short Bowl has a 3/4" x 1.5" deep chamber...

The Tall Bowl has a 3/4" x 1.75" deep chamber...

The Shot Glass, 50gm Tin of tobacco and Mini Bottle are for reference in size…

YOu know i love your pipes but is it weird to compare your pipes to candy. FOr some reason my brain is telling me "phill makes some cool candy like pipes!"

Could be the stem or i'm weird. Have you smoked any of your creations yet? Or applying any stain?

Shoto, the stems are from MM... The small pipes have come along only because I'm running out of large pieces of wood... I just thought that I would sit back and see what comes to mind with these...

I made a small pipe for my boss... He's a fly fisherman and wanted something light and small...

I have smoked them, and they are very nice... They seem to be a step above a Cob for draw... This might be because I drill them with the 5/32" bit... The bowls and chambers are as large if not larger than most cobs... I have one that is probably close to 2" deep...

No stain, I'll just let them color them selves... The dried wood takes a nice hand buff with just a small amount of paraffin wax... just something to seal them with... It is non toxic and will give a nice shine...
