Guy is obviously talented in a league of his own.
That he is, indeed. Briar is a very hard wood, and he puts more detail into his briar pipes than most meerschaum carvers. So in my opinion, what he does is nothing short of amazing.
Does he also drill the blocks or does he use pre-drilled blocks and just do the carvings?
I'm not 100% sure. I've chatted with him a few times, but never thought to ask him. I'm pretty sure he does, however, because on the Smaug pipe, which is quite large and long, the tobacco chamber is drilled way in the back of the head between the dragon's horns. I've never seen a predrilled block drilled like that.
I'd love to have one his pipes, but they are way out of my price league. I think most of them have run between $1000.00 and $1500.00. And if memory serves me correctly Smaug sold for $2500! Pricey? Without a doubt. Worth it? In my opinion yes. What he does takes a lot of work, by hand, and a lot of time. And I've seen plain smooth artisan pipes sell for a lot more than what he charges, which are truly works of art.
