A while back someone mentioned that they would be reviewing the whole Peterson line of tobacco . In my never ending quest to taste all the blends good and bad , I swooped up 7 tin sampler . The first tin in the stack is Sunset Breeze . A blend of VBC with amaretto . The blend packs a nice punch without being overly agressive .The amaretto does not over power the fine tobacco . The Viginia is smooth and the burley only compliments the fine black cavendish . While the blend may not be for the timid , it is sure to reward the smoker who is willing to give it try . What other fine Peterson blends are you enjoying .

Very Merry Christmas 2009: Possibly my favorite Christmas blend I've tried yet. Very tasty aromatic. Vanilla hit me first then I picked up a bit of bourbon, last a tiny bit of apple. Burnt great and came ready to smoke. Room note was pleasant as well. I really enjoy it.

Special Reserve 2010: Thought this was very good as well. I again first picked up vanilla first. Right after I got a nice nougat flavor and nice fruity taste. Burnt well and stayed lit the whole smoke. Once again didn't have to let it dry out at all.

I smoked University Flake yesterday. I forgot to post it in the what are you smoking thread, so 1 de-merit for me.

I didn't seal the tin well, and it dried out. It still smoked well, but lost some of the nice berry flavor. The tin aroma now smells like iced-tea. It was still pretty good.

Peterson Irish Flake is reserved for when I can't sleep or feel like watching the room spin.

Sherlock Holmes is pretty good when I am in the mood for a somewhat Danish-style aro. I have Peterson Gold, but I am not that fond of it.

We have a tasting going on over on the Peterson's sub forum on Smokers Forums. One tobacco a month. I still have 12 varieties to go through.

Irish Flake. Tin nose. Anise? Raisins? Maybe. A fresh small like Spring on a meadow.m The taste. Mild and rather one dimensional but not in a bad way. Not for the novice, the nicotine is definatly there, almost on a par with the brown ropes. I'm keeping some of this around. I can see it occaisionally taking the place of my after dinner black ropes.

Special Reserve 2010. SUPRISE! This is NOT your typical aromatic. Open the tin and a Milky Way candy bar slaps you in the face. Caramel and nougat. There is high grade tobacco in there too. Stuff a new cob and set it alight. Dessert! Vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce. Good stuff with a room note that may allow me back into the rest of the house with a lit pipe. No tongue bite at all although it will develope a bitterness if pushed. It comes in a 100 gram tin only.

University Flake. Now here is a tobacco that I can live with. I've twelve tins of this stuff. Fresh mown hay and berries. Not strawberries but currents. Again, kind of one dimensional but good high grade tobacco with a medium flavor. The room note is pure tobacco due, in my opinion, to the burley. Again, not for the novice.

So far, I've liked everything I've tried.

I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane.

If you like your sweet aromatics, I highly recommend Peterson's Sweet Kilarney for its caramel-y taste and coconut-y aroma. Got a new tin the other day and I'm already half-way through. Delicious.

I have not tried any of the Peterson blends, but I plan to. I went into a cigar shop the other day and found out that they were a Peterson dealer. For the future. That is the great thing about pipe smoking, you can never try them all.

I kind of gave up on aromatics after I started smoking nonaromatics. But, I have always dreamed of an aromatic made with high quality tobacco. I too have never smoked any of the Petersons, but their aromatics seem to offer what I seek. I heard my wallet actually shrieking in terror as I was reading these posts.

I've had University Flake, and it's a great medium flavored burley Virginia flake made with awesome care.

It's worth noting that I think there is more Burley than VA in the mix and the nocotine level is pretty healthy if you're not up to the challenge or haven't eaten in awhile.

Peterson's P3 is a bit of a chore, what with it being a plug, but well worth the effort. I let it dry for a day after removing the cellophane wrapper, as it seemed too moist at that point. Two pipes later, I really think it's worth the effort.

If you think you can or can't do something, you're right.

I was recently gifted a tin of Special Reserve 2011 by the company and have yet to try it. The package arrived yesterday and it has been too cold outside to sit and enjoy a nice bowl.

For some reason I like every round-tinned Peterson blend I've tried, and none of their other offerings.

I am a self declared Pete Nut. I love the pipes and tobaccos. I started off with Sweet Killarney and Irish Whiskey. Love the caramel flavoring of Sweet Killarney. I like Irish Whiskey, but I'm not in love with it totally. Then I moved on to Old Dublin, a latakia blend, which tastes alright but if I haven't eaten within an hour of smoking it it highly upsets my stomach. Recently I picked up a tin of Sherlock Holmes and Connoisseur's Choice. I like Holmes a lot. Some say it has an apricot aroma, I feel it smells more like the raspberry truffle candies my fiance gets at See's Candies. It smokes evenly and always to the bottom of the bowl for me. My favorite far and away has to be Connoisseur's Choice though. I love the mixture of the tropical fruit and rum flavorings. It has a great taste, especially with a cold glass of Baileys, and leaves an amazing aroma as well. I have DeLuxe Mixture and Luxury blend on order and I'll post about those as soon as I have a few bowls of each.

Lately one of my favorites has been Peterson's Irish Oak.
It's very good, but I like a little more Perique, so I add a pinch.

Sunset Breeze and Sweet Killarney (so far my all-around favorite tinned tobacco) are absolutely great! I have Connoseuirs Choice which I haven't opened yet but can't wait to.

Irish Flake - the new batch is chocolatey. Smoke 1 flake if you haven't eaten anything, several if you had a full dinner

University Flake is also nice but has a lot of Burley.

I like the peterson tobacco's, some of my favorites are the Sherlock Homes with it's Burley and Virginia blend, the De Luxe Mixture, the Luxury Blend, and of course the Irish Oak. I usually have a tin of each open to brighten up my day.

I enjoy Irish Flake and University Flake regularly; although I've not sampled nearly as many of their offerings as I should have. Damned backwards Canadian laws restricting my TAD!

My order just came in this evening with my tins of Luxury Blend and DeLuxe Mixture. Gave the Deluxe Mixture a try and I loved it. It doesn't top Connoisseur's Choice for me, but it is a very close second.

I've tried most of Peterson range over the years and Connoisseur's Choice is the one I prefer as my "favourite" aromatic. Have had the odd problem with the tin not sealing correctly after its been opened so I have now made an habit of dropping my opened tins into a plastic zip bag, just in case.

Just ordered a tin of the Special Reserve 2009 which i found at an online dealer here in the UK. Never tried Peterson's tobacco before and thought this was criminal so it fuelled a case of TAD here at my office desk

Just finished a break in bowl of the Luxury Blend. That one is delicious. Once again I'm not nearly as obsessed about it as I am Connoisseur's Choice, but it gives DeLuxe Mixture a damn good run for its money for second place among the Pete blends. It has a great mixture of orange, honey, and vanilla. The vanilla didn't really come in to play towards the end of the smoke, but the orange and honey were pretty noticeable the whole time. Thoroughly enjoy this blend and definitely would reccomend it.

Sunset Breeze is amongst my favourites from them. You're exactly right about the Amaretto.

Sweet Kilarny is heavy on the sweet, as the name suggests. It's not a bad smoke, a little heavy on the palet due to it's caramel flavour but a wonderful smell and taste in small amounts. Pretty much my favourite.

Gold Blend isn't my favourite, but cant be called terrible just for that. Cavendish and Vanilla are the predominant flavours and really carry it off all the way through the smoke.

Old Dublin I'm not much a fan of. Abit too harsh for me, though not bad if the bowl is large and it gets alot of air. Do not, really do not, smoke this if it's dried out. It gets milder, but starts to taste like old cigarette smoke.

Sherlock Holmes is a brilliant traditional blend that, when I get hold of a 'Holmes' pipe, will feature whenever I sit down for a good think or to read. It's relaxing.

The De Lux Mixture is an absolute joy. Moderatly mild, sweet, and well flavoured. The Cavendish in it is accented and helped alot by Virginia without being overpowered or overpowering. It's perhaps my favourite blend (bar Sweet Kilarny) that they make.

That's most of their current range: I need to properly try the flakes, a couple of trad blends and the christmas ones. Hope this helps.

Turned out that the retailer i ordered the Special Reserve 2009 from didn't have any in stock after all so i just got a tin of the Special Reserve 2011 through instead. Haven't opened it yet but am going to try some a bit later.

In the meantime i picked up some Connoisseurs Choice which i have tried a couple of bowls of. Love it and the Rum flavoring comes through in the taste and smell. My girlfriend even loves the room note which has only ever happened with Dan's Sweet Vanilla Honeydew before lol

I fell in love with the Holiday 2010 and have a little over a kilo of it. Tony Montana, eat your heart out.
The Summertime 2010 is a gorgeous peach & melon affair, though sadly the topping fades rather quickly. Still a great, sweet smoke.
Holiday 2009 is likewise great upon opening, then settles into a nice chocolatey nougat smoke.
Special Reserve 2010's nougat has a bit more longevity, and will be fondly remembered.
Sweet Killarney is probably my gold standard for a caramel flavour.
Irish Oak is a strange animal; the 13-year-old tin I have is divine, while the newer blend is a bit lackluster--but by no means a bad smoke. I'll have to try it with some added Perique per Lawrence's suggestion.
I'll definitely be including more in the next order...thanks for reminding me!

I've only tried Irish Flake from the Peterson line. I agree with chuckw on the tin note: raisins. I'd add damp, earthy tobacco as well--takes a few strong sniffs to tease out the much more subtle raisin from the tin. As everyone that's tried it says, this is very strong tobacco! I've twice smoked half a bowl in my small Dr. Grabow full bent. Not to be trifled with. Rubs out okay--not effortlessly, but well. Will have to try this folded sometime.

Irish Oak: A good every-day blend, with some wonderfully smokey flavours that I didn't quite expect. Something I'll probably get a tin or two of to put in storage to see how it developes.

Update to before: This is it. this stuff is beautiful to smoke, no tongue bite, sweet flavours, like smoking eaton mess. Theres a hint of the virginias in there too. I'm going to try and get another few tins before the end of the year from somewhere, I bought the last tin from my local B&M, but they do have a good stock of the 2010 reserve as well so I'll get a tin of that before I go home for the summer. This is the aromatic for those who dont like aromatics. Just puff slowly.

Picked up a tin of Sunset Breeze and University Flake today. Can't wait to give them a try. Maybe I'll have my first smoke since clearing up the gingivitis tomorrow and give Sunset Breeze a try. If it tastes anything like it smells in the tin it's going to give Connoisseur's Choice a very good run for its money as my top Pete blend. Love the Amaretto casing they put in Sunset Breeze and I love virginia, burley, black cavendish blends. Can't wait to try University Flake either. Love the plum casing at least in the tin. If it smokes like it smells I'm sure it'll be a treat.
