I'm thinking about my next pipe choice, and am leaning towards a bent pipe. I'd like to keep the cost below $200. There's a few Peterson models that attract me, including the 301 System Standard, a Bent Pot. Is this style a hassle to keep clean? How do we clean the lower reservoir?

After the smoke just wipe it out with a folded over cleaner.
The good thing about the System pipes is that it takes the guess work it of buying a fully bent pipe. No worries about proper drilling. They are much simpler to keep clean than many people think.

It's pretty easy. I use a tissue to clean off the tenon and then fold the pipe cleaner in half like a U shape and put the bent end into the shank. Just wiggly it around a bit and it'll find the well and soak up the nasty moisture.
