Thanks to the kindness of forum member "Dixie", this chubby little beauty will be heading my way later this week. I'm so thrilled, I had to share it now.
A chubby, pre-Republic 999 Peterson has been on my list for a long time. I've had newer, slimmer 999's but the chubby style has eluded me. Dixie thought this would make a good addition to my Rhodesian collection and he is right.
I don't know if it has hallmark dates, but the COM is definitely pre 1946.
It needs a little work, but I think preserving the patina will be paramount.
I'll post some follow-up pix later.
Thanks Dixie!

I am not a chubby guy (well actually in some ways...)but I really like that 999. That is a keeper.

Nice it came as a fishtail. I have a recent 999, but it came with a P-Lip, my only one. I like it, but wouldn't want two P-Lips.

The pipe was delivered yesterday and I finished the restoration this morning. Give the issues, it turned out quite well. I like patina on an old pipe and this one has plenty. I'll look forward to the first smoke. Full restoration details are here:

Gratefully, the marks on the bowl were not from burn out, but rather scorch marks. I was able to diminish those marks (see blog for details).

And the finished pipe. She still has plenty of dings and patina, but I like a little character in an old gal. Thanks member Dixie for offering this one to me, it will be a cherished piece in my collection.

Just a guy with some sandpaper....but thanks!
I smoked the pipe this evening, naturally with some MM965. A very nice draw and smoke. Like my 9BC models, this one has a mini-system style sump of sorts. 70 years of crud was hanging out in there. It took the better part of an hour to clean it out with brushes and alcohol. But, after the first smoke, it was worthy of that effort. Smoking that one really made me smile.

I had one, one of my first pipes and I loved it. But someone stole it. Made me sick to lose that one. 1945 era Pete. Since I have hunted high and low for one in good condition and awhile back bought an unsmoked one from Pipestud. They are the perfect hanger and great smokers. Also very cool the one I got from Steve had a bare briar bowl. I love the fat stems.

What a nice find!

The modern 999 looks more like a Rhodesian, this chubbier version heads down the author route IMO. looks like it will be comfy in the hand when it's good and ready to smoke!

Lovely restoration. Interesting note about the pre-republic nomenclature: The stamps do not guarantee the age. I recently restored a hallmarked Pete with pre-republic nomenclature, but the hallmarks dated it to 1973. I doible and triple checked this. One of my sources is doing significant research on Peterson pipes. He had been to the factory and they still have the pre republic stamps around at the factory.

Al, lovely work. I have only one pre-republic Pete but I was always struck with how deeply the inscriptions are on the silver, making identification somewhat more easily detected.
