Lately it seems the name Nielsen has a way of inciting acute attacks of PAD in me like no other pipe making fraternity. Last time it was Tonni and Eric Nielsen. This time the brothers Jorgen & Kai did the deed. Soon I’ll be a married man and no doubt my pipe buying will be drastically curtailed by SWMBO. :| Better enjoy my PAD insanity while I’m still a free man! 8O
The first is by Jorgen, a AA grade natural finish with a gorgeous Cumberland stem and exotic wood shank accent. It’s a fabulous smoker; very cool, dry, and very light for its size. The grain isn’t spectacular and I’m surprised at the grading when compared to other AA grades with more uniform straight grain. But there was something about the shape of this one that really appealed to me. The seller listed this and the other Jorgen Nielsen pipes as being made in Thailand. Thailand?? What’s up with that? Did Jorgen leave his native Denmark and set up shop in Thailand?
Next is a Kai Nielsen Jewel of Denmark B grade, a very unusual eight-sided bent panel with fairly uniform flame grain on all sides. This one and the next are still in transit so I have no idea of how they smoke but this one looks to be a good clencher with its full bend and modest weight.
The last is also a Jewel of Denmark B grade by Kai Nielsen. I have a thing for bent poker and pick axe shapes and this one really grabbed me. One of those pipes that immediately dazzles you and resistance to PAD is well-nigh impossible. Beautiful grain with some fabulous birdseye on the rim, this one has it all.
One of the things that really stand out in Kai’s pipes are the stems. Both are hand cut from high-grade German ebonite rod and look superbly executed. They add a certain refinement and elegance to his designs. The fit and finish appears outstanding despite the misaligned stem in the first Kai pipe photos. Cumberland is the most beautiful stem material in my book and Jorgen’s stem is gorgeous. Simple in design and very comfortable.
