Since this morning I've been cleaning and cutting down my neighborhood trees to prevent any more from falling on our homes and cars the ice has built up and weighed down the branches causing them to snap and fall. I lost two 22+ year old trees and a good portion of another today it's sad. What's even worse is some of us luckily not myself have got to go without power until Wed!! What a terrible Christmas that will be for some. I witnessed three transformers blown from the ice build up and took a nice fist size ice block to the nose while clearing branches hurt like a punch to the face man lol. Still have lots of work clearing branches I'll post pics up tomorrow.

I hope everyone is doing okay. We were spared most of the ice here in Ottawa, but we got a crapload of snow. Lucky.
I remember the ice storm of '98 I was living an hour south of here, and my house was out of power for several days. At night all you could hear was the snapping of tree limbs, I'll never forget it.

Best of luck from the wintery West to our friends in central Canada. Good buddy north of TO is without power. No sense when it may come back on. Stay warm and stay away from downed power lines. Those mofos are lethal!

My Brother: No power for 8 hours

My Mother: No power for 12 hours

My Sister: No power for 14 hours and counting

Me and My Wife: No issues whatsoever (we live in Mississauga).

It is nasty though:

Morning gang.
Surfacing after a chilly day at Chez Pruss. We lost power at 2am Sunday, and were fortunate to have it return at about 11pm. We transferred all of our perishables from the fridge to a cooler on the back porch, and spent much of the day under many layers of clothes. Dinner was heated on the camp stove in the kitchen, and we were reading by candle light after the sun went down. 21 hours without power was a chore, but we got off lucky. Times like this remind me just how fortunate we are, truly.
Smokey, sorry to hear about your trees, it sounds like they were popping all over the GTA. I know Brian has a couple down in his backyard. Our neighbourhood is young enough that the trees bend and don't break, but aren't so young that the bend right over.
Here are some pictures my wife captured yesterday.

Cheers,
-- Pat

Pat I am sorry to hear that you are without power that is terrible i really hope it all gets sorted out for you before Christmas i cant imagine not having power at this time so far i am lucky enough to only get flickering lights but ive spent most my time outside clearing the roads and neighbors driveways. Can i just say also that times like this really show who your good neighbors are the ones that came out with chainsaws and axes to help each other out. anyway my street was not the worst a fee streets over got it bad. heres some pics Sorry for the terrible quality its a phone camera.

You can see here the trees were touching the ground from the weight they started cracking shortly after.

OMG.!!!! Be careful.!!!!

We were hit bad several years ago and the supers did not clean it up.

We had some ice hanging from the eaves that was 2 foot around.

It was up to us and the neighbours to get it cleaned up, surprisingly no one was hurt.

Thanks Andrew, we're all good now. The power came back at about 11pm last night, and we're good to go. I'm about to go chip the car out to make a run to Canadian Tire for some more rock salt and de-icer. The sidewalks are a freaking disaster.
Glad your 'hood turned out to help each other, mate. That's a blessing for sure.

That's good to hear bud have fun chipping I had 2" of ice on all my cars lol I found pouring windshield washer fluid works really good it breaks the ice up nicely. Also good luck finding salt they were sold out when I went if Canadian tire is out try the garden centers they usually have a bit.

We lucked out here in Niagara. Plenty of rain, but it was only below freezing for a short period and quickly went above 0 and started to melt, so our ice formation looks like it was a lot less than what you guys got. Take care guys.

Thanks everyone, we're good, I have sortied out and have secured the requisite beer and scotch for our celebrations. Now if I get skunked on rock salt I'll at least go home with something. There are an amazing number of trees down. Nature's way of pruning I guess...

PS - Peck, I am having trouble adjusting to your new Avatar. I'm not sure it quite captures your suave, devil-may-care, sardonic persona quite like the old avatar did....

Pat next best thing is a giant sack of cat litter, my driveway is covered in it now and it gives a good grip on the ice. We didn't lose power so we were lucky, I live in one of the only areas of Oshawa that had power. We did have a couple of good sized trees go down, a pretty big branch came down on my van but there was a good inch and a half of ice covering it so I think that protected it.

15 years ago, the area I live in was hit with a similar ice storm. Six days without power, but our wood stove kept the downstairs tolerable. I never want to go thru that again.
What a shame that such beauty is so dangerous. Be careful, and try to stay warm.

Thanks for the pics, guys! We didn't get any freezing rain on the south side of Lake Ontario in my town, but a few towns over, they did and were without power for a few hours.
I've been lucky enough to live through two ice storms so far and both were awesome displays of how feeble we are when Mother Nature wants to take us down a peg or two. While I hate the work and problems the ice storms cause, I can appreciate the beauty following the storm and how a situation like that brings us all together, helping each other out.
Good luck out there! Stay safe and remember to walk with your weight directly over your foot and take smaller strides. Slipping on the ice is no joke and I can't speak for you, ut I don't recover from spills as quickly as when I was younger. We'd hate to have to put one of you down due to a broken hip or something...
