I mentioned the Chigaco Screw based tampers a while back. I have finally collected all the stuff to make them. I started a couple today.
This is the Chicago Screw I start with.

I cut off the rounded end about a half inch long and the other end (with the screw) about a half inch long too. I use those parts to make the ends of the tamper. The smooth, rounded end is the tamper and the screw end holds a tobacco pick.
First is a bamboo one.

The end comes off to allow use of the pick. It is timed to the bamboo flat too. My ancient epoxy actually worked!

On this one, I used the wire handle from a pipe brush. I thought it was unique and could be used for other things too.

That was so much fun and so easy, I started on an acrylic one. Someone had asked about the little lathe I have and what it is good for. I used it to drill the #60 hole for the wire pick in the first tamper. This one has been drilled to create the hollow for the pick and is now being fancy-fied just because. This one will have a solid wire tamper, just because. It may even have an emerald crystal imbedded in it, just because.

I thought you might like the green one Kevin.
Anthony, I have some redwood now, but nothing else unusual.

Very cool.
I don't have a lathe, so I can't turn any tampers, but I love to find twigs and branches I can work with. Over the summer I found this neat small branch with some sort of spalting on it and decided it would make a good tamper.
I drilled it lengthwise, stuck 5/32 brass tubing in it for a sleeve and then stuck 1/8 steel rod in the cap. I epoxied a piece of ebony to the bottom with a 1/8" rare earth magnet flush with the surface and the cap now snaps in place and won't fall off. A few coats of wipe on poly finished the job.
Lets see some other DIY tampers...I love them

Can't see the pics bassbug. I like the magnet idea, must try that. Now to figure out where the little magnets could be.

I am not a mod, but the link to the images you posted are not links to images. It is about 900 characters that doesn't reference an image. Where are they posted? Do you have an album. I may be able to help, but...
I just pasted the 'link' into an editor and see that it is google stuff. They don't like sharing on forums much. I tried, but can't find exactly where you have the images posted, other than 'googleusercontent'.

The masses of lines are not unusual with Google pictures. But something is missing in the link or has been added, is my guess.
