I was coming out of Walmart and its been freezing rain and I fell on my blackthorn! Now I feel like shit one because its a priceless family airloom and two because it my only cane.

Oh man! That really sucks Irish. I wonder if it could be repaired with a fiberglass wrap then repainted to match the original finish. Bering an heirloom it might be worth the effort. Just a thought.

I thought that too! But it split all the way up to the burl! I'll probably cut it off at the break and mount it.

Irish I feel for you buddy, my father gave me a ring that he had had since he was in his early twenties. It had significant meaning because he presented it to me during a ceremony in which he had received it (Fraternal organization) Anyway somewhere along the line it split, so I stopped wearing it until I could get it fixed. I lost that ring after I lost my Dad. About a year or so later I was able to find the company that made the ring and had an exact replica made of it from the same ring mold. Fast forward about 10 years I gave it to my son to wear during his Mom's memorial and somewhere along the line that day it was lost too. I learned however it wasn't the ring that was special it was that my father had given it to me. However you ended up with your blackthorne Cane you will still have those memories. Cherish those my friend. Get a replacement cane and wear your Irish heritage proudly. Take some lessons in Irish Whiskey stick fighting it's amazing how it's a great equalizer..

@redbeard I'll just make a case for it! I'd have to trim it down on a lathe to make a tamper out of it.

Hey Irish, Im sorry about your blackthorne, and I know thats a real let down when you lose or break something that means a lot to you. You stated that you fell on the blackthorne, my question to you is this... did the blackthorne break to keep you from breaking.

Cold Steel has a blackthorn copy that is designed to not break and look identical to the real thing... I thought it was rather interesting, the president of Cold Steel has a real blackthorn in his collection that this was designed after. http://www.coldsteel.com/Product/91PBS/IRISH_BLACKTHORN_WALKING_STICK.aspx

Sorry to hear about that Irish never a good day when you damage an heirloom especially a sweet blackthorn. Maybe its time you find yourself another sweet cane and start a new heirloom, something tells me it would be cherished for generations to come.

Hmmm I wonder if the cold steel ones are weighted like the traditional fighting sticks where? They used to drill out the burl and puddle liquid lead in the hole to make them more formidable weapons. Having studied the art of Irish stick fighting I can tell you from experiance they make wonderful weapons. They are also one of the few things you can carry that the police will not hassle you about. Just remember to limp

There's lots of good, tough woods out there. Make a new one. I knoe it sucks that a family heirloom got destroyed, but like johnnyrebel said, it presents an opportunity to create a new one.

Edit: Just don't forget to make one tougher than your butt.

@phil yeah they will! There's a medical supply store in town I'll swing by before work and get me a $7 cane. It won't be anything special but I won't be falling every five minutes! It just sucks because I've had that blackthorn for a long time! And when I lost my leg it became like a best friend always there when I needed something to lean on, or there when someone crossed a line and needed a good ol' Irish ass kicking!

Hey irish, I still have that cedar cane (It's really like a short staff, but you can modify it as needed) if you want it. Let me know and I'll send it your way. It's no blackthorn but I made it and you will have to work real hard to break it.

    Sorry for your loss Irish.

That Cold Steel cane is cool, as is baron's walking stick. Saying a prayer the medical supply store has something decent to see you thru and use as a spare when you find your new "best friend."

That really sucks, an option would be a woodsmith. He would be able to replace the section broken, not to hide it, but preserve it. The important parts the grip and foot could be preserved and not look half assed.

    Ok guys,

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I have spent several long calls to a supplier in Ireland that supplies blackthorn sticks. So here is the issue, the draught we saw this year in North America was the opposite in Ireland they saw more rain this year than in their recorded history. What this means to the Blackthorn crop is that most of the material is either too small or brittle to use for cane material. The harvest this year is 12% of what they saw in previous years. This has driven the price up significantly. What is available unless we can find old stock is in the $300 dollar range. However, they are expecting a better season this year sooo I have a suggestion that is attractive, low priced to get Irish through and maybe his finances and the industry will have settled down by next year. In the meantime the walking stick shown is $67.00 from Georgetown tobacco and is in stock.

Or for that same price you could get the Cold Steel version and use it for self defense and for walking! Mabey they'll even custom size it to be the same size as your old one.

    That's a damned shame.

Nice to see another bataireacht practitioner hereabouts.

You can certainly try the Cold Steel plastic copy to see if you like it, but I'm guessing that you won't. They are considerably heavier for the size than the real thing and nowhere near so "lively," if you know what I mean.

Now, they won't be the heirloom, but you can find genuine blackthorn sticks at a few places on the web for less than $100.

    Here's a supplier at $57:

    Stick 1

    These are sourced at $103:

    Stick 2

This shop reports a back order to March 1, at $60:

    Stick 3

And one more with a good variety, albeit shipping form UK:

    Stick 4
