In the What are you reading? thread, the last book I posted about was "The Tipping Point".

It is a fascinating book that studies how things "tip". This refers to when a product or idea goes gangbusters and becomes really big. I was trying to see if I could learn anything to make pipe smoking tip.

I finished the book during my Richmond Show travels. The book not only talks about how to make things increase in popularity, but also how to decrease things. One example was a study on decreasing the crime rate in NYC. He introduces the "Broken Windows" theory on this, which is pretty cool.

In one of the chapters he talks about the smoking of cigarettes by teens and suggests how to decrease it, with a totally different approach than what the typical antis have used. I'm not going to get into that in this post, although it was quite interesting.

In that section of the book he references studies about different people's tolerance to nicotine.

Basically, because of their genetic make-up, some people have a very high tolerance and some people have a very low tolerance and everything in between.

Now I don't feel so bad that I am a nicotine lightweight.

I'll fall off my chair while Bob laughs away smoking three bowls of the same stuff that killed me in half a bowl.

However, I can drink his butt under the table ... but I've had a lot of practice.

Do YOU have a HIGH or LOW tolerance to nicotine?

I would say MID tolerance with a swing either way depending other factors (Time of day, beverage & food intake, etc.,).

    Low...very low.

There are some blends that take me 2-3 sessions to finish a bowl, these are blends no one ever refers to as strong.

I have tried the sugar trick, no help.

Now, I just avoid anything with a review that hints towards a lot of N.

Hitting the mid to low range. Used to be a bit higher but since the coffin nails have been long gone I have noticed my tolerence to lower.

    LOL Kevin!

As Kevin said; I have a very high tolerance to nicotine. I can smoke the strongest pipe tobacco or cigar and it does nothing to me. There are a few exceptions though. There might be a blend or cigar that if I smoke on a completely empty stomach might cause a little bit of a, for lack of a better term, tingling feeling in my stomach. But that is about it.

As far as the drinking goes; Kevin does have me beat and if we ever have to have a drinking contest between us, I will insist that we have to be smoking Peterson Irish Flake while drinking so that I can have an edge, lol.

    Bob,

I use Irish Flake as a base line. Sometimes I can smoke it with no effect at all, other times it makes me feel like I'm buzzed but without the euphoria.

Lightweight. I added my (otherwise excellent) Solani 633 to the box pass because I can't smoke even a 1/2 flake without the spins. A full flake had me nauseous.

I have yet to find a blend that I cannot smoke! So i guess I am a heavy weight. While hunting I have been known to dip Cope and smoke the pipe at the same time and never have an issue with the "N". But then I have been smoking the pipe over 40 years so I guess I am acclimented to it.

Must be all the years I have smoked a pipe. I can smoke about anything that passes for tobacco.

Is N something repeated exposure to higher doses builds a tolerance?

I always quit when I'm getting kicked in the head...so maybe I reinforce my low tolerance level.

I'd say I'm mid to low tolerance. I actually like the beginnings of a nicotine buzz but once it progresses to the nicups and hot spits I have to put it down. 1792 will do this to me after 2/3 of a bowl, Haddos delight will do it in half a bowl, dorchester just starts to get to be too much towards the end of a bowl...etc. However, classicgeek, I can smoke bowl after glorious bowl of Solani 633.

High I guess. I can smoke anything out there and dont really notice the nicotine. However, i grew up in a tobacco growing family and have absorbed so much that I cant really tell if a blend is high in nicotine or not.

Generally, I'm a lightweight but there are times when
that doesn't seem to apply. I have no idea what makes
the difference, as I've tried eating, fluid intake and
slow smoking... About the only thing that works is for
me to load a small bowl with the stronger blends, but even
so there are blends like Dark Flake that are just plain
    evil, in any amount.

I think I have Kevin and Simon beat for a ludicrously low tolerance to nicotine. If I accidentally inhale anything other than Captain Black or 1-Q, it goes straight to my head, and I feel a bit woozy. Eat, don't eat. If I inhale more than a few puffs, I feel nauseous. I'm this way with booze too unless I've eaten a decent sized meal. It makes my wife laugh, since she can drink like a fish. One shot, gets me mildly buzzed; two, I'm full-on buzzed; three, I'm drunk. If I eat, though, I can go toe-to toe with my wife for a few shots (I only shoot whisky). I love it, though. Makes me a cheap date...

I tolerate most virginias very well. Latakia is a rare smoke for me. The only tobaccos that have wiped me out are 1792 and Black XXX rope.

I'm no lightweight, but I do have limits.

I roll my own cigarettes and they're nonfilters. That's the way I like them, but too often, and they make me feel like crap, especially after too much coffee. With the exception of my morning cigarette, I also smoke most of them halfway down and return to them later.

With pipe tobacco, I draw the line with G&H Dark Plug. I packed a bowl a couple weeks ago out of a jar I've had for about 4 years and thought those G&H blenders can be real smartasses when they want to. It'll be 4 more years before another inch is gone.

    I'm no lightweight.
I like my smokes to be rich and thick.
Sasieni Balkan for example or something sweet and thick like Paladin Black Cherry.
There are some dark cavendish blends that will float my boat like some maple blends.
My tastes swing wildly. But, one thing they have in common is a solid vitamin N content.

About the only tobaccos that effect me are the brown ropes.

Lucky you! I loved the tin note, room note, taste, everything. But I'm not in this sport for the nic ups. I kept a few flakes for myself after putting the rest in the box. I'll try them again in a couple years.

I can tolerate a medium level of nicotine, but beyond a mild buzz I don't really like the effect.
Some nicotine is necessary though, as I think it drives my appetite for tobacco.
I smoke 6-8 bowls a day -- nearly all of it mild blends; and I rarely smoke pipes larger than
what I guess are group 4's (~2 grams).

I like what pstlpkr was getting at with "richness." I think nicotine works with a blend's body,
or depth of character. If a tobacco is flavorful, has good body, and strength -- all three in balance --
then I think that makes for a smooth smoke.

I find Irish Flake refreshing and smooth and not at all overwhelming when it comes to nicotine. I guess that means I have a high tolerance.
