Hello all! My name is elliot and I am a week into pipe smoking and I am in love. Any words from the wise to get me started on the right foot? One question I have, what is the first thing I should do with a used pipe bought online?

Pack looser than you think you need to.

Smoke slower than you think you need to.
You can send a used/estate pipe to a restoration expert. There are many out there, but here is one http://www.walkerbriarworks.com/html/pipe_restoration.html
Or if you cannot afford something like that, maybe try a retort. You can buy one online, or make your own. There is a thread on retorts here http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/pipe-retort
Here is a video on one of the many ways to pack and light a pipe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XHYPso7TXs
Hope this helps!

Everclear on pipe cleaners , or 151 if everclear is unavailable . Med grade alcohal is fine , 91% OR GREATER , NO RUBBING ALCOHAL , especially the green one . Try not to spill it on your bowl , or whipe it quick if you do , you can lighten your finish or strip it . Try not to smoke too many bowls in one day with the same pipe . Buy a few cheap cobs if you only have one briar pipe . Briar needs a 24hour rest after a few bowls im my personal expirience . Read up on retorts this is a good way to keep your stem and shank clean , which is where most of the bad tastes accumulate . Remember that you will not have the same taste preference as the next puffer so try different blends , it may take 20 or 30 trys to find the one that was made for you . There are many wonderful folks on here with lots of experience , read through the forums .

P.S. welcome to the forum !

Oh yeah, another thing, watch out for cigarette tobacco labeled as "pipe tobacco." Stuff like Red Cap, 4 Aces, and others. I learned that the hard way. They label it as "pipe tobacco" to circumvent the laws.

To get good tobacco products at a reasonable price, try any of the sponsors advertised on this site.
Happy smoking :puffy:

A very humble beginning, cheers, welcome pipenoob
Ah let's see, here's my advice:
Start with an inexpensive briar pipe ... Dr Grabow, Savinelli. If that works out well, I highly suggest you try a meerschaum pipe, too.
Read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_tobacco
Seriously, do your homework on the different types of tobacco strains that go into pipe tobacco blends, and know which ones are in the blends you're trying, it will help you discover what you like.
You might try looking up a new blend you want to try here and see what other people think.
Ask questions on the forums here if you're not sure ... and you'll do fine, enjoy yourself.

Don't go crazy spending big money on pipes right off the bat, your taste in styles/shapes will no doubt evolve until you find what works for you. Same advice for tobacco. Blend choices can be bewildering at first.
Go slow, learn to pack, light and tamp to avoid tongue bite. Don't try to smoke thru tongue bite, just put the pie down for a day or so and relearn those lessons.
Welcome to the forum and enjoy the experience!
