Hello, guys
My name is Bruno, I'm from Brazil and I'd really like to start this hobby, I've never smoked pipes before, I used to smoke cigars, but the prices in Brazil are making me change my mind unfortunately.
I have a little bit of money saved, have done some research and found this pipe on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Savinelli-Trevi-Liscia-606-Tobacco-Pipe-/171030775289?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d23a85f9
Also this extra itens:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIPE-SMOKERS-PIPE-TOOL-CLEANER-TAMPER-SCRAPER-SPIKE-NEW-/200647871923?pt=UK_Collectables_Tobacciana_Smoking_LE&hash=item2eb78b8db3
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SAVINELLI-Cowhide-Durable-Versatile-Portable-L-Smoking-Pipe-Bag-no-pipe-/181113839010?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2b39dda2
I don't know if it's too much for a first timer, I'm hoping you could help me out.
(If I cannot link ebay pages here, I'm so sorry, just let me know and I'll remove it.)
Is this a good pipe to start ?

Any tips for a newbie ?
Oh ... and about tobaccos ? which ones are good ?
Thanks for reading and for the patience.

I am fairly new myself, but I've already found out it's hard to go wrong with a Savinelli!
However, based on my experience, you might want to pick up an ultra cheap pipe to make your mistakes on (i.e. a pipe you won't worry about ruining). There are a couple of nice $10 Mr. Brog pear wood pipes on Amazon (tho insanely cheap, they are a good smoker - just pull out the metal piece or the "stinger" from the stem). Or you can get an even cheaper corn cob for about half.

Welcome to the hobby and the forums, Brunow!
Since you are an experienced (cigar) smoker you will probably want a good pipe from the very start. Normally corncobs are recommended for starters, but that really applies to folks who don't know if they'll like smoking and stay with it.
The pipe to which you linked is indeed a fine pipe; but the fully bent stem may be frustrating when using pipe cleaners.

I would look for a straight or slightly bent pipe to start out. Savinelli is a good brand though.
The Czech 3-in-1 pipe tool seems a bit too expensive. I think they're normally sold for about half that price.

Check SmokingPipes.com or 4noggins.com for starter kits, which will have everything you need to get started.
Search PipesAndCigars.com for blends that contain cigar leaf, which will ease your transition to the tastes of pipe tobacco.

Welcome to the forums Brunow! You've stumbled onto a treasure trove of friendly advice here in these forums. I echo Cortez's sentiment regarding starting your trip into pipes with a good quality briar pipe. That being said, a lot of stock is put into rotating your pipes if you plan on smoking frequently. Typical advice is to rest a briar pipe for a day after having smoked it.
To support a rotation you could always buy a small handful of cob pipes or low priced briars (seconds, basket pipes or ebay finds).
Tobacco is a pretty personal choice, if you have a good tobacconist locally I think investing in the time to go in, ask questions and to sniff and puff samples is the right road.
Welcome to our crazed but civil community.

I would also recommend one of the starter kits, often they come with a cheaper briar pipe and some different samples of tobacco all for very reasonable prices.

Welcome Bruno,
I'm relatively new to these forums as well but I can assure you the advice you'll receive here is second-to-none. I hope you enjoy this new hobby! I dabbled in cigars a bit before I picked up the pipe and I must say, I find pipes to be much more of an experience and a meaningful smoke than a cigar.

Sorry I should note that by cheap I don't mean low quality, the pipe I received was a no name but looked nice and smokes well.

Oh my ... I didn't expect you guys to be so friendly and helpful !

That's why I really love to get help outside Brasil :P
Thank you all for being that much supportive.
I'll look for those starter kits, a few low priced but not low quality pipes to get me started and to be able to do those beginners mistakes without damaging a good/pricey pipe.
I think I'll also buy a better quality one for later when I'm all settled with this new art.
If it's not too much trouble, I'll do my research and post back here so you guys can evaluate it.
Once again, THANKS !
Cheers, mates.

brunow, welcome to the site. I also highly recommend using 4noggins for all your pipe and tobacco needs. He has a great deal of experience shipping internationally and his prices are very competitive. I would definitely go for a Savinelli as your first pipe. It was the one I started with and I still smoke it today after 13 years.

Welcome Brunow!
Don't hesitate to ask any questions here, no matter how trivial they seem. Everyone here is super friendly and a few are even quite knowledgeable. Lol, I kid. I must say there are a great bunch of guys and gals here. I think I speak for all of us when I say welcome aboard! Enjoy and post often!

Welcome aboard.

Savs are very good pipes for the money. It's really hard to ruin a pipe if you are careful. I would advise you, however, since you are a cigar guy, not to use a torch lighter on your pipe, since they burn too hot for a pipe.
You might want to try some latakia blends; as a cigar guy, you are used to fairly full flavors, and lat blends will give you that.
Other than that, I will give you my standard advice - smoke the best tobacco you can afford, in the best pipes you can afford. That will increase your odds of getting a good smoke. And be patient!

Welcome to the forums brunow. Savinellis are excellent pipes, so I think you found a good one. The tamper and case look really nice as well, nice price too. A good place to start.
Where in Brazil are you? I have a long time pen pal from Brazil. I also am a fan of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso.

Thanks, mate !

I'll do that :)
@Jud

Thank you !
I won't use the torch lighters, thanks for that advice.

Will try to find those blends as well, a fully flavor would be great !

About the best tobaccos and best pipes, I'm hoping to get there ... in time :P
@olewaylon
Thanks, buddy !

Hey there !

First of all, thank you.

I'm from the city of Sumaré in the state of Sao Paulo.

Those are great old timer singers, you should look up Chico Buarque de Hollanda

So, guys ...

This is the list of products I've so far:
Starting with the pipe, I'm between those two:
http://www.4noggins.com/SavinelliTreviRusticated111KS.aspx
http://www.4noggins.com/SavinelliQandaleChurchwarden106.aspx
I really liked the churchwarden but I don't know much about it.
and this one:

About the tobacco:
http://www.4noggins.com/captainblackwhite.aspx?variation=2464
or
http://www.4noggins.com/GawithHoggarthBulkLATAKIA-Cyprus.aspx (following the advice of Jud)
and to finish:

Thanks !

Nice choices and 4noggins is great to deal with. I would recommend the Trevi over the churchwarden. Churchwardens look cool, but tend to burn hot.
The cob is not my thing, but a lot of people like them and they are a good value.
As far as the Captain Black, I would steer clear personally, but you might like it. You might want to take a look a Newminster tobaccos (smokingpipes sells them) for inexpensive aromatics that aren't too goopy and have lots of flavor. I would recommend Newminster French Champagne and Danish Black for starters.

Many get tired of hearing me say this, but the best advice I can give someone new to pipes is to be patient. Patience touches everything there is in our hobby, and patience is the hardest thing to learn.
