    Hi Pipers!
    Just joined today.
I am a recent cigar smoker and then my wife asked me to smoke a pipe because of those smelly cigars.
Well, that's one of the best things she's asked me to do!
Still smoking cigars. And doing it at work during break time. It's easy lighting up a bowl during break. (Can't smoke a cigar in the amount of a 15 to 20 minute break.)
    Regards, Mike

Hello everyone, New to the site and new to the pipe. After years of walking past the tobacconist and telling the wife how I would like to try a pipe, she has finally taken the first step for me and bought me a starter pipe for Christmas.....So far I love it and look forward to exploring this new past time. I live in the California Bay Area (east bay) and work in the construction field. I look forward to learning from the folks here and hopefully getting some much welcomed pointers.

Thanks Lawrence. Interesting how, if you live long enough, all the random stuff you pick up over the years turns into a collection.

    Saying Hello
I'm new to the site, and trying to find my way around..When I was a kid my dad moved me from North Carolina to Michigan. When I retired I moved back to Carolina..NASCAR country though I'm not much of a fan.I'm 68 years old now.I've been a pipe smoker for the past 40 of those years.I smoke Aromatics part of the time, but I prefer Latakia blends as long as they're not too heavy.I have about 25 what I call mid grade pipes.I live about 20 minutes from a smoke shop.To be honest though I buy almost all my tobacco online.I hope that now and then I can contribute something worth while to the conversation here.

Welcome obelus, mrivney, calihunter, & puffy!

Obelus, your collection is astounding. I dream of having a fine collection like yours someday.

mrivney & calihunter - We've all been where you are. Some more recently than others... myself included. I have to say without this site and the members of this forum, I would've been very alone on this discovery voyage into the world of pipes. Feel free to ask any questions, no matter how "dumb" or"n00b" you think they are. We all had a learning curve and the members here can help you with just about any problem or concern you can come up with.

puffy, I look forward to hearing of your experiences and any wisdom you can pass along.

I should have also mentioned me and my pipes. My nicer hand mades are by Eckhard Stöhr and Erik Nørding . A rustic brandy shape and an apple. I only use Dunhill tobacco in theese, fond of Standard Smooth and Early Morning Pipe. My everyday pipes are more mid grade, an older Orlik and meerschaum block insert Hilson. I enjoy Ashton Gold Rush. The slight honey background is nice but it's the very mild lemon that makes it a fresh and zesty smoke. Within the hours of "lady company" I smoke a Vanilla Creame... The meershaum block insert I like because there is really no need to rest the pipe much. I have learned a lot by reading what others have to say here and I'm glad I found this site.

Nice to have a forum to explore a favorite hobby/past time among likeminded friends. Been on-and-off again pipe smoker for 30+ years. Started out with aromatics but have drifted over time away to cooler smokes.

Have browsed the site and topics and feel like a 'kid in a candy shop' with an hour passing online without much notice.

I don't expect to become as expert on pipes, tobacco and such as some members appear to be but will enjoy the craic!

    Hello Fellow Pipe Enthusiasts!

Just wanted to introduce myself briefly. New to the site but not to the pipe. Have smoked one on and off for the past 34 years but have taken to it avidly now in the last two years - still feel like a novise tho! Have a few pipes that were my Grandfathers and ones that I've acquired now over the years. Would enjoy finding some fellow pipe smokers in my neck of the woods that I could sit, chat and enjoy a smoke with.

    Happy New Year to All!

    Hello,

I Started smoking a pipe this summer as a way to avoid going back to part time cig smoking. What a great decision that was. I only smoke a bowl or two a day in the evening, but I look forward to that time on the back porch every day. Fantastic stress relief! I started a friend of mine and he is hooked as well. I have about 10 pipes now and will get more in the future.
I am still in the experimental stage, trying lots of different tobocco's to try and find a few that work best. I feel like a kid in a candy store again (love the aromatics by McClelland and the mild Mac Baren's). Thank goodness for the internet or I would have thought carter hall and captain black were the only tobacco's I could smoke.
I am hoping to get some help in identifying a couple of pipes i received recently.

    Happy puffing

    Carter

Hi. I'm a new comer to pipe smoking. Just started less than 2 months ago. Badly in need of support and discussion groups as I live in a lonely country where I'm sure I'm the only woman pipe smoker in the country, and probably the only pipe smoker at all. Tobaccos available here in Thailand are horrid. Captain Black and Mac Barren's Seven Sea (hardly a good choice for a newbie with no experience with tongue bite. I buy most of my tobaccos and pipes through the internet now, but it's nothing compare to the experience of actually being in a tobacconist shop. (long sigh...). So anyway, just want to say hi to those of you out there. Happy Smoking. P.S. I have a question, my new Peterson's Aran-68 whistles like a piccolo. Is it considered a problem if your pipe whistles? (Apart from the annoyance?). Thanks. River.

    Howdy all,

Very long time lurker here. One of my New Year resolutions was to actually sign-up and involve myself as I've been hanging around here for a long time and feel like I know you all anyway.

I've learned a lot from reading the forums and articles available here at pipesmagazine.com. Thanks to all for that. I don't have a large or fancy collection of pipes or tobacco but what I have is my own. I enjoy the art/beauty of a high grade but find myself more attuned to the practicality of function for pipe smoking. I've spent a few $$$ on some decent pipes but I've burnt through my share of cobs mostly(literally burnt holes through - cobs don't taste all that great while on fire).

My views and tastes are always evolving - which is one of the joys of pipes. Any given day can produce a different result. I engage in food, wine, beer, liquor, etc in much the same way. The subjective nature of these endeavors keep it interesting. I relish the known preferences but like to push the boundaries sometimes to find a new experience with an old stand-by or novel addition(this doesn't always work out).

My interests include being a father and husband - riding my scoot - food/wine/spirits - travel - history - free markets/freedom of choice. Thanks again for all I've learned already and I hope to come out of the shadows to make acquaintances and friends for the long haul.

    Best from sub-zero Denver,

    J Lee

Hi all, new to the forums here, and glad to see a relaxed and pleasant bunch of folks in the posts.
I'm recently re-acquainting myself with pipe smoking, and doing well with leaving behind the bugbear of cigarettes. I say re-acquainting because my first pipe was purchased for me by my then-girlfriend about 20 years ago, a very nice Sasieni 4Dot Slim Billiard Ruff Root Dark. I enjoyed smoking, though I'm fairly sure I was doing nearly everything I possibly could wrong at the time (smoking hot, poor tobacco choice, zero maintenance, etc.) The pipe sat in a storage box of my papers since then. Now, with a bit of age and (perhaps?) some maturity, I'm in the process of refreshing the Sasieni and, when they arrive, the new pipes from a bout of PAD. I've gleaned a fantastic wealth of information, tips, tricks and generally pleasant reading from the forum these past couple of days, and offer my thanks and appreciation to all contributors.
Wishing everyone a hearty and tasty new year,
    Romeo

    Welcome River,

There may be a gem or two for you in there, and it should spark some new discussion.

Thank you, Lawrence. Your welcome is priceless. I read through the string you bumped for me, and am glad that I'm not the only one with the whistling problem. I guess that's the benefit of having a forum like this, so that you find you're not alone. Strangely enough, the whistling Aran is now my favorite pipe. I like it better than the more expensive ones. A minor defect can be endearing, it makes the pipe more friendly and approachable, much like this forum. Thanks again for your kindness. I learn a lot from you and from this site, and I'm sure pipe-smoking is going to be my life-long passion. River.

    Hello everyone!

I've been a bit of what they call a 'lurker' on forums, thought I would join up and contribute and be a bit useful if I can! Been smoking pipes for a year now, and own 6 pipes with another in the mail as we speak!

I started with the usual aromatics such as petersons, Alsbo etc but now I'm liking Squadron Leader, Old Dublin and I think I may try Early Morning Pipe soon I think. Suggestions welcome too!

Anyway, looking forward to contributing and happy new year all!

@River, glad to be of service, and we're all glad to have you.

    Welcome to you Rls80.
We love having relatively new pipe smokers join the fourm.
It's from those such as yourself that a lot of really good discussions get started.
So, don't be shy, just dive right in!
I do have one suggestion: You might try giving Lane 1Q a try.
It's a great go to smoke, when you don't feel like being too adventurous.
It goes by many names: Tinderbox calls it Wilshire; my local calls it Yorkshire, and there is plethora of other names. But 1Q is enough to let you tobacconist know what you want.
We're glad to have you in this friendliest of fraternities.

Thanks for the warm welcome chaps! I've done loads of research online and 1Q is mentioned all over, unfortunately in the UK it doesn't seem to be available? I've seen a couple of alternatives about that I can get hold of, but they got poor reviews. I'll keep searching though!

Welcome ris80. I agree with Lawrence's suggestion of 1Q from Lane. If a Tinderbox is not close by, then there are several online sources to procure some. I would suggest any of the ones that have ads here to take a look at. I would suggest Shortcut to Mushrooms from Just For Him. It is a nice blend and I am sure is one of their best sellers. Hope to see you here often with posts and any other questions you may have. As Lawrence says, "Just dive right in."

OK, you are over in the UK. I would suggest, if they have better availability over there, almost anything from Samuel Gawith or Gawith & Hoggarth. Both are very reputable, have been around forever and have a great selection.

Brand new to the pipe world. Have been smoking cigars for 5 years. I was introduced to pipes in iraq by a interp. Bought my first briar pipe and look forward to trying all that comes with pipe smoking. Any advice would be great.

    Greetings from Missouri.
As my username suggests, I prefer genueine Missouri Meerschaums. Heck, the company is only about 45 miles away from me.
I smoked my first pipe more than 40 years ago -- Cherry Blend in a Doc Grabow.
About 30 years ago, I really got into it, even had a couple of Savinellies and usually smoked Mac Baren's Golden Extra or Scottish Mixture.
Then I gradually drifted away from pipes in the late 80s and lost my pipes, pipe stand, humidor, pouch, etc. in a move.
    Now I'm back.
A couple of months ago I bought two Mo. Meerschaums (would you believe I had never smoked them before?).
    Man, I love these pipes.
I've been experimenting with various blends and OTC packages, and for now I have settled on Prince Albert and Carter Hall. Maybe I'm in an American classic phase.
As I write this I'm enoying some PA in a Country Gentleman and enjoying a cup of coffee. What a great combination.

    Greetings to the Pipe People:

Just wanted to follow protocol and introduce myself. I have been a reader of the articles, etc. for a little while now, but wanted to join in order to participate in some discussions and ask a few questions here and there. I am 30 years old and smoked a pipe for roughly 8 years now. I look forward to gaining further insights, information, and anecdotes regarding pipe and tobacco.

The name refers to a poem of which the second part was composed by Ralph Erskine, a Scottish minister of the Gospel.

    Kind regards to all!

Been 'lurking' for about a week now trying to catch up on some of the past posted info. Recently switched from cigs to pipe and I really hope my taste buds sart to come back soon.

Bhpdrew, whom I know from another forum, was cool enough to set me up with a couple pipes and a quite a bit of tobacco to start me out on. I'm really liking the 'Maple Street' as an 'on the way to work' smoke since it doesn't run my carpool partner outta the car, and I'm really looking forward to trying a few other samples until I find the 'one ring to rule them all'.

I sorta skipped the introduction and went straight into posting...oh well

Lets see...I reside in the Atlanta area, work in the local news business and I have been smoking a pipe for a couple years now, I have t2o Brigham pipes which are fantastic and a MacQueen pipe, which makes me feel like Gandolf minus the cool beard and hat. My wife doesn't like anything to do with my smoking so I stick to "Man Niche" in the garage where we have a tradition with my brother and best friend for "Mondays" which include grilling and smoking pipes...which if I ever miss I usually end up have a cruddy week. Thats about it...I look forward to learning much from everyone!

    Carry on...

Hey everyone, I just joined the forums!

I just started smoking a pipe a few days ago actually. I've never smoked before, (I'm 24 years old) and bought a corn cob pipe to learn. I used to be 100% anti-tobacco. I mean I really couldnt stand it. I NEVER thought I would smoke tobacco. That was up until a couple weeks ago when I learned the TRUTH about tobacco, and how these anti-tobacco campaigns are lying! Its good to meet everybody!

Welcome co11apse, and one word of advice from a fellow newbie--take your time, 'cause there's no finish line. I've had my training wheels on for a couple decades now

    Heyla all!

I'm a pretty new pipe smoker myself, after many issues from 2007-Mid November of 2010 with roommates and siblings 'mis-appropriating' my pipes I never had one for more than a few weeks before I had to toss it in the bin, but back in November I got myself 4 pipes (though only the two Petersons proved to be to my liking) and have been rather enjoying it since, including the occasional pipe borrowing with friends.

Of course it is time for my yearly 'entertainment' budget to be spent (get cooler toys when you do it that way heh heh) and I've got 2 rather nice (and 3 not-so-nice) pipes all picked out with my new music equipment. I am SO SO SO looking forward to my Peterson Ebony and Ivory set getting here! Ebony is a classic billiard straight and Ivory is a meerschaum bent billiard, which was the closest thing to my ideal meerschaum I could find.

I am most fond of Petersons, obviously.

Oh, and I am on a seemingly fruitless quest for the 'perfect' Peterson Green Spigot (ideally XL series)ever since I let that one slip through my fingers two years ago. Same goes for the perfect solid meerschaum 'calabash'-styled pipe (had one of them slip by as well heh heh).

I've pretty much given up on churchwardens, I've loved the ones I borrowed but all the ones that come in the shapes I am most fond of are a bit outside my price range, or use filters -- which I'm not fond of.

Bah, it's late, I'm tired, and thus talkative -- I'll shush now and dole out doses of me in smaller. . ermm. . . doses.

    Sincerely,

    Yoru

    Hello everyone.

I'm a newbie here on the forums. I just joined today actually. I've been looking for a place to discuss and learn about pipes for some time but haven't really found a place until today. I'm not an experienced pipe smoker(been smoking for about a year) so I apologize in advance for any dumb questions. I'll try and keep those at a minimum.

Welcome mowens. The only dumb question is the unasked one. So ask away. We are more than happy to help you along the way. Also take a look at the left hand side bar for some articles that might help you out.

Dang. I didn't notice that the old thread was closed and a new one was open. Since I'm WAY behind on the welcoming, I'll just blanket everyone with a big hearty "Come on in, sit right down and pack a pipe!"

Although I have to mention to Obelus: nice collection! I would so love to get one that looks like this one of yours. That is very nice.

Also @nramey: I have a Brigham that's very similar to the one in your avatar pic. Got mine as an estate, and it's becoming one of my faves.

    Welcome all!
    Simon
