Well, the Ebay gods have smiled on me yet again. I enjoy my James Upshall Rhodesian, S-grade so much I kept an eye out for an estate P-grade. Last week, one showed up on Ebay, complete with some fuzzy pictures and not much other information. The seller confirmed there were no bite marks on the stem, so I took a shot and won the bid at $76 shipped. I figured if it wasn't in decent shape, it would probably be a good smoker.

    This was the Ebay picure:

The seller must have over-nighted the pipe from Washington state to Maryland and it arrived today. I was very pleased to see the pipe appeared to have been shown some care. The stem was very oxidized, but the it was indeed bite mark free and the logo stamp was perfect. The bowl had a very light thin cake and the top was free of build-up. It has a few bumps, but nothing significant. Oh yeah, it is huge. It has no size stamp but it has to be a 6 if not an XL. A weigh confirms that and it comes in at a whopping 80 grams. No clencher for sure, but I like an occasional large pipe. It's slightly larger than my 4K Castello in overall size.

I reamed the bowl slightly and gave it an Everclear/sea salt soak for a few hours, but nothing was really pulled. Some bristle stem cleaners and Everclear also didn't yield much. Someone did show this pipe some smoking care. I started in on the stem while the bowl was soaking. I gave it the usual wet sand at 1000>1500>2000 grit, than the final three grades of Micromesh. A final polish on the wheel with some plastic polish and carnuba wax.

I buffed the briar slightly with some white diamond on a cloth wheel, than with some carnuba wax, followed by a final hand polish with Paragon.

I was able to get in a quick (well, 45 minute..) smoke with some Boswells Burley, my break-in tobacco. Wow, what a smoker from the word go. I was a little worried about the draft hole, as it is just under 5/32" but the draw and smoke is magnificent. It rivals my Sea Rock for sure. I'm taking it with me to the NYC pipe club meeting tomorrow and look forward to trying some of my favorites.

Here's some more pictures from the refurb:

You did a great job on that stem, especially keeping the logo stamp intact.

    Cleaned up well!
You mention using a "plastic polish" as part of finishing the stem. Brand name, information?

That is a beauty. If it doesn't smoke well, give it time. I found Upshalls take a while to break in but when they do, wonderful! For $76 that pipe is a steal!

James Upshall pipes aren't given enough credit. They can be bought cheap enough that almost anyone can own one, and I think everyone should! They are great pipes.

I smoked it this evening at the NYC pipe club, it just smokes like a champ. I can't wait till I get about 10 bowls in. I do have to revisit the stem, there is still a bit of oxidation peeking through. I was just getting the cramps out of my fingers....
My other Upshall is a S-grade Rhodesian, which is a pretty hard to find Upshall shape to find, at least from my searching.

I remember that pipe on Ebay, and was actually bidding on it. I was too busy to go sniping.
One of the few wanted makers that I haven't picked up yet. You got a hell of a bargain, and did a fine restoration too!

Good deal Danno. A member on the SmokersForum offered to sell a very nicely grained P-grade billiard to me recently, but my funds are busted. If you interested in that, PM me.

hi Al, great looking pipe. you do great work. i like the detail you put into your pipes.(stems and bowls) i have never put that much work into my stems, i should pay more attention to my stems. i have no buffing device. iam glad you are happy with your great find. tim has my charatans right now. he told me my supreme could bring 500-1000 dollars. the others are not as collectible. how long have you been smoking a pipe? i hope you and your family have a merry christmas.

Some folks have inquired as to what plastic polish I use. Currently, I have a bottle of Blue Magic, but I also like Meguiars. It is a liquid super-fine abrasive available from most autoparts stores. I use it as a final prep polish, than apply some carnuba over that (or Paragon). It seems to keep the oxidation at bay on my vulcanite stems. You can apply by hand to take out small marks, scratches, etc.

I did go back and give that stem a little more work, now all the oxidation is gone. That oxy solution, used with the wet micromesh sanding is a little rough on the old fingers! I have a needle file set and a tiny, flat blade file did the truck on the button crease.
